DAL trades Ott/Pardy to BUF for Roy

http://stars.nhl.com/club/news.htm?i...id=DL|DAL|home

Quote:
Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has acquired center Derek Roy (DAIR-ihk ROI) from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Steve Ott and defenseman Adam Pardy.

Roy, 29, has played the last eight seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, including a 69-point year (26 goals) in 2009-10; a 70-point campaign (28 goals) in 2008-09 and an 81-point season (32 goals) in 2007-08.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound forward broke into the NHL with Buffalo in 2003-04 after being selected by the Sabres in the second round (No. 32 overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft. Since then, Roy has more assists (266) and games played (549) than any other Sabre, and earned the third-most goals (161) and points (427).

In Buffalo franchise history, Roy is tied for the most regular season overtime goals (6) and he ranks ninth in assists. He has also appeared in 41 career NHL playoff games, including two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals. In all, he has earned 7 goals and 18 assists for 25 points in his playoff career.

“Derek Roy is a legitimate top two line center, and has been productive throughout his career," Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. "He is a proven commodity that helps fill a void at a position of need for our club. We believe Derek helps make our hockey club better and we are happy to have him."

No, because it's Derek Roy.

Well that should solve the 2nd line center issue now.

Yeah I'm not sure about this. Roy is okay but he's a UFA to be. that's not younger or harder to play against.

Kings fan here. Very interesting trade. I hated playing Ott every game. Roy has WAY more skill than any player in this deal. I am happy not to have to face Ott 8X a year but a little worried about how many goals you can now put up with Whitney and Roy. Scary offense for sure.

Give Roy an extension and call it a day. A one or two year extension.

As an outsider, i think this deal is absolutely fantastic for you guys.

Eriksson - Benn - Ryder
Whitney - Roy - Morrow
X - Eakin - Vincour
Nystrom - Fiddler - Garbutt

I think he fits your needs MUCH better than Ott, and Pardy was definitely expendable; he's not really that good in my opinion.

You guys could really be a darkhorse team next year if everyone plays up to potential, i like your lineup a lot.

Like this move from a Buffalo standpoint. Roy leaving is addition by subtraction almost for us, but I do think he will fit in nicely in Dallas. He'll have a full offseason to train (he was coming off a torn quad last year) and he should be good for 60-70 points.

Roy is an excellent PKer, solid defensively, although it is prone to making a great play on defense and then immediately turn it over. He's not really a playmaker though at times he tries to be...he should really shoot a lot more, he has an excellent wrister but he doesn't use it enough. Average on faceoffs, should be a consistent 30-40-70 guy.

But we definitely needed toughness, and Ott gives us some flexibility using him at wing or center.

Can anyone shed some light on Pardy though? Know next to nothing about him.

I'd say it's a win if Roy is extended a couple years. If he leaves after this year it's obviously a loss.

I'm not so scared anymore. Joe is making the moves he didn't seem like he was able to make before Gaglardi, it's refreshing.

Our top six looks decent (if Roy can stay healthy).

Whitney-Benn-Ryder
Morrow-Roy-Eriksson

Now, all we need to do is sign Shane Doan and purge Robidas, and offseason is a success.

Whitney-Benn-Ryder
Eriksson-Roy-Doan
Morrow-Eakin-Vincour
Nystrom/Wandell-Fiddler-Garbutt

Pardy is a pretty average bottom pairing defenceman, he's nothing spectacular. Stars had a logjam on D with the acquisition of Rome coupled with some of their prospects looking like they might push for a spot.

Should have a pretty solid D with Goligoski, Larsen, Dillon, Daley, Rome & Fistric/Robidas (assuming you guys might dump one of the veterans?)

In fact the more I think the more I'm pissed. They didn't even get Luke Adam or another young player/pick? Does Fistric have negative value? Hell does Ott have questionable value?

Roy is good but that seems like an overpayment to me.

oh, it's Pardy not fistric. That makes this better but I wish we would have gotten Adam too.

Tbh pardy is probably a 7 at best and makes too much money
