Steve Ott. Adam Pardy Scouting Report

Big trade Star fans, was curious for scouting on Ott. Us Sabre fans are pumped to get Ott but don't know much about Pardy, seems you guys are happy he was throw in.

For you

Derek Roy,

Good 1b/2a offensive center, more of a shooter then passer, similar to Jeff Carter style. Would do better with more of a playmaker on his wing. He is pretty fast and shifty. He is generally always healthy minus that one big injury which many say is why his numbers were down last year. He left in most of the Sabres fans doghouse as he was often found partying downtown and regarded as selfish and childish. He also took a shot at the end of the season calling out the coach. When he got injured, it was reported a teammate said that now that he is out we will go on a roll and Buffalo actually did and won a lot. (correlation, causation obviously 2 different things). He pretty much needed a change of scenery and I think he will be successful in Dallas. Hope he works out well for you.

So what are we getting?

[Frozen Failure]

Ott: Good at faceoffs, taking runs at guys, skating, running his mouth, agitating. Basically Kaleta with more offense and upside.

Pardy: 6/7 D-man who happens to be overpaid. His sbnation scouting report is accurate.

[Undecided]

Ott's a 2nd line LW that can fill in on Top-6 as necessary, but ideally it isn't his permanent role.
He's good at what he does, although occasionally it will put a fire under a team (San Jose )
He also has had a habit of taking bad penalties, but will occasionally bring someone with him.
He's a fan favorite for sure, and i'm sure Buffalo will love him.

Pardy, I really don't know.
He didn't do very well here.
Expect nothing more than a 6/7 guy, but I understand he is fairly physical, and dropped the gloves a time or two if I recall correctly.

So what are we getting?

Pardy is basically worthless. He has some offense someplace, but he seems to need time to build confidence rather than being a good 7th D who can fill in here and there without much notice. He lost the battle for 6th spot to Fistric who does nothing but hit.

Ott is an agitator, but I think that part is overrated. He is a 2/3 tweener wing who can take and win the important draws. Best faceoff guy here for years. He hasn't really played C well, doing better work as a wing. On your second line he can put up 40 points, and on your 3rd he can still score but his strength is defense. I wanted the team to build a checking 3rd line around him, but it never worked out. He doesn't fight much anymore, but he does take too many penalties, although he cut down from 10-11 which was very bad. He can kill penalties, but hopefully you don't need him on the pp. Overall an elite 3rd liner who can fill in on the 2nd line if needed

There were days where Pardy played fairly well IMO. A lot of people busted his balls for every single wrong move but he did have some good games. We never got him into a regular playing schedule so he was perpetually viewed as a 7D, seems like he could be a 6D if he were given a normal schedule.

I'll try to keep this as objective as possible, but it will be difficult.

Ott:

He's one of the best faceoff takers in the league. Put him out there for every important draw.

He's a 3rd line LW first and foremost. You can play him at all 3 forward positions but expect a large drop off. You can play him in the top-6 but expect a large drop off.

He'll shock you at times with some of the most creative assists you'll see from anyone on your team and you'll think he might just be a playmaker after all, but it's just a mirage.

No one has loved the concept of passing the puck backwards more since the heyday of the Soviet national team. If Ott can give the puck to a defenseman, he will. It's infuriating.

He does fight. He'll back up his hits, but on his own terms. He fights guys that are roughly his size and who have hockey playing ability.

About those hits -- a lot will be borderline. The NHL is watching him constantly. Ott is always pushing the limit between charging and hitting.

Then again other times he'll float around for shifts on end seemingly disinterested. Something has to spark him.

Average defensively. Tends to lose his assignments, especially if they come off the boards quickly and head toward the net.

Can play on the PP in front of the net. Used to have the worst stone hands you've ever seen when it came to finishing tap-ins but has improved in that regard.

No one gets more breakaways than Steve Ott except maybe Grabner. Ott is always cherrypicking way high in the neutral zone. Unfortunately for him he goes on massive stretches where he can't finish those breakaways to save his life.
