I think it is more about opening up a spot for Grigorenko--who they think might be NHL ready--a la Couturier last year.

RT @Aportzline: Would not be surprised if #CBJ had Rick Nash talks with #Sabres, per RDS report, as GM Scott Howson is willing to talk w all teams.
RT @Aportzline: Can confirm, however, the #Sabres are not on Nash's approved list of teams to which he'd accept trade.
RT @Aportzline: #CBJ GM Scott Howson has talked w all clubs with the hope Nash and his agent, Joe Resnick, would expand the list. No sign of that happening.
For wanting out so bad, sure is making it hard to do.

I call that being pretty smart. Resnick/Nash know CBJ would rather trade him than start the PR battle and have a captain who doesnt want to be there next year.
Nash will not be back. He can make his choice on this one.

For that to change, all that has to happen is for it to leak out that Howson had multiple deals he was willing to do, but since Nash would rather stay in Columbus than play for Buffalo/Carolina/Ottawa/Vancouver/Saturn, he's had enough of this and is going home for the summer until something changes.
Someone on the Parise thread on the main board posted this interview with former Minnesota GM Lou Nanne. He believes there is no chance Parise returns to NJ. He was talking about how Philly is one of the teams he fears and mentions they will get rid of Briere. Does Holmgren plan on dumping him to fit in Parise and Suter if they sign?
Let's suppose the Flyers signs one or both of Parise and Suter. They will then have to dump salary, right? and if they decide to move Briere, what else will be involved? I am assuming Holmgren would have to trade Briere plus 1st or 2nd round pick for some team's scrub salary dump, like Matt Walker 2.0, or do you think there actually would be a demand for Briere?

We've gone over this before--if, by chance, we get both Suter and Parise, the only major move that has to follow is to dump Mezsaros. (We'd also need to waive Shelley).
If the bonus cushion is put back in, as expected, then we're really pretty comfortable just by moving Mezsaros.

So now that Roy went to Dallas that probably will take them out of the Ryan sweepstakes correct? NYR were reported to be not interested in him because of the asking price. I don't know other teams involved right now. Eskin might have been on to something on sports final though when he talked about us going after him. Also this quote from Panotch

One more thing. Bobby Ryan? Anaheim GM Bob Murray kept changing the deal. That's why it never happened at the NHL Draft.
Which would explain Holmgren being so miserable all draft weekend.
Seems like we were close but Murray kept ****ing with Homer. I really think if Homer strikes out on Suter/Parise sweepstakes, Ryan is here with us. And not for the laughable amounts the Duck fans want.

Why would you dump Mez over Briere (assuming they can get him to waive)? If your goal is to improve defensively you get rid of your worst defensive player and keep your depth on D.
Dumping Briere wouldn't be the worst option either if the Flyers brass thinks they can get that production out of Schenn or Couturier playing second line center either. They want to get young. Of course there will be people who say we will be in trouble because we keep unloading players who are for the long term(Richards, Carter, JVR) or that have no movement clauses(Gagne, Briere).
