Hopefully Tim will be able to keep the scouting staff together when he takes over from Bryan.

Just curious, when Bryan's contract is done in two season would people rather have Tim with same scouting staff or new GM and new staff?

Tim with Dorion as Asst GM. Letting the scouting staff and Dorion in particular go would be a huge mistake. Wanna see someone get hired the next day after being fired, put Dorion on the Market.

Agreed. I never want to see Dorion leave the Sens.

Bryan Murray IMO is the best GM Ottawa has ever had with Johnson I think being a close second. Hopefully, whenever Bryan is ready to step down it's an amicable situation & he is allowed to sign the GM post off to his nephew Tim who I assume would make Dorion his assistant GM. It makes the most sense for a transition in power in the organiztion with the least amount of disruption. However, they will have to make room for Alfredsson somewhere in that management structure.

With Luke Richardson leaving for Bingo I wonder if Ottawa would ever bring back Wade Redden as an assistant coach for the defencemen. Wouldn't hurt to have one of the best first pass defencemen in Sens history back, I'm sure the fans would appreciate that & could be seen as a very class act by the players around the league. Then again it could be Phillips position in a couple of yrs.

Last few posts were exactly the type of things I expected to see after today's moves.

I have faith. I mean, we can't lose another trade to Columbus, right?

You have to ask yourself have the sens gotten better today?

Lost

Kuba, Carkner, Foligno, Konopka

Gained

Lundin, Methot, Latendresse

I can understand letting Carkner and Konopka go

Foligno + Kuba > Methot + Latendresse

At first, I liked what was going on, but that trade really tarnished that for me. Hopefully they sign someone who can make up for it.

Yes. Especially considering Lats is only on a one year contract to prove himself. If he sucks, he's gone, if he gets 50ish points (Foligno style), he's not making 2 mil next year.

We'll see what we spend the money on... if we add a top line forward with the money saved then it's a win. As Melnyk has said this team is on a BUDGET, so Murray will need to build the best team he can within that budget. So saving 2-3M might allow him to make moves that he wouldn't have been able to make otherwise.

Not THAT surprised. He usually doesn't know what he's doing when he's not at the draft table.

Sorry but the right way to look at it is :

Kuba + Cowen (2nd pair rookie) + Carkner

Replaced by

Cowen (1st pair) + Methot + Lundin

What it means is that Cowen's role will increase. You can be worried about that but things aren't as "linear" as you seem to think...

=======================================

Foligno + Konopka

Replaced by

Latendresse + Silfverberg/Zibanejad/Da Costa/Petersson

IMO, Stone/Noesen/Puempel/Hoffman/Prince/Grant all need more development time, they shouldn't graduate this year unless they don't give us the choice

I'm hoping 1 more spot gets open for Silfverberg/Zibanejad/Da Costa/Petersson, or they'll have to wait for injuries

I also think that :

Winchester will be replaced by O'brien
Daugavins will be replaced by an healthy Regin

====================================

Finally, Latendresse is a slightly better hockey player than Foligno (if healthy) but you will witness that. Better offensively and better to score goals mainly.

Methot is better than Kuba defensively, particulary because he is a lot more physical (people whined about Kuba's softness a lot) and clears the front of the net with authority. He doesn't need to be as good offensively because he will probably play with Gonchar on the 2nd pair while Cowen gets a promotion with King K

Overall, I think we subtly improve but it doesn't garantee more success. We'll see what happens, that's the fun part

Like many of you guys, who really have no idea of what you are talking about. I suggest you go back to play NHL2012

Why is everybody all up in arms about this trade?

Murray needed to think carefully about the order in which Phillips, Gonchar and Kuba needed to be let go. This is a smart decision, as Methot can prosper under a new team.

Foligno is a replaceable player. He was getting better, but only marginally. With Silfverberg, Zibanejad, Stone, Da Costa, and perhaps a healthy Regin pushing for spots, Murray needed to look at the lineup and spot who was replaceable. And he did just that. Plus, he added Latendresse, who will serve in the exact same role, with potential to be even better.

We're getting too attached to role players like Konopka, Carkner, and Foligno. Our core is Spezza, Turris, Karlsson, Alfie, and arguably Cowen and Michalek. Everybody else is replaceable, people. Even our top prospects, until they start playing games for the big club.

So, everybody just calm down. Murray did good yesterday.

IMO, Murray made an amazing recovery to what could have been worst day in franchise history.

Most importantly, he addressed the biggest needs we had and one of the hardest to obtain: A top line scoring, gritty, powerforward.

Bobby Ryan is not only a sniper but also a powerforward who is good for 150 hits which we desperately need against the tougher teams and who is also still young to grow with the core.

Murray also added a very good signing(Compared to everything else being thrown around) for a 2nd line player in McArthur.

Great job, Murray!

All we need is a top 4 defender and probably another 2nd liner to compete which is much more doable than getting a top line winger.
