Could actually be 5 years, it looks like we'll find out tomorrow.

I think 4 years is fine. He'll be 28 years old and we'll know what kind of player he's going to be. No more talk about potential.

6+ years would mean EJ giving up a couple of UFA years so they would have to give him a pretty big contract. IMO, it would have to be $5M+ per season.

Does Johnson's missed season due to the knee injury count as one of his 7 years until UFA? I know it counted towards his ELC, so I'm just assuming it counts towards the 7 years.

Either way, the Avs top priority needs to be finding him a partner, IMO.

4-5 years sounds perfect to me. I expect ROR to get the same length.

the issue is not so much that he's gonna be a UFA when the deal ends. it's that he's gonna be 28 and in demand heavily when he is a UFA and the Avs fans are seeing the circus with Suter and want to avoid it with EJ.

I want to to see him on a pairing with Hejda. Hejda can hang back and allow EJ to develop his offensive game already.

It would be a lot better for us if it was 5 , that would buy us a year of UFA. Usually that's how the teams works, they give a player more money to buy those years over 28. In a perfect world i would like a 6 years contract just like the one Price had today.

A 4 years deal would be like playing with fire , IMO

i wouldn't mind revisiting that scenario for a short time, but it didn't work last year.

I would prefer Johnson to be with O'Byrne than Hejda.

The problem is that Johnson and O'Byrne are the only two right-handed shots out of our seven D on one-way contracts.

I wish we'd always announce our deals at like 1 or 2 AM EST to troll the reporters on the east. Like the late-night trade which was epic.

I think Hejda and EJ can work.

It was kind of the perfect storm last year. They were put together right away when both were struggling on an individual level. Hejda was just returning from injury and EJ probably felt the pressure of the looming captaincy.

I think they could fit well together if they were given another shot. Plus it would balance out the pairings a bit more in terms of offense/defense.

Hejda-EJ
Wilson-ROB
Zanon-SOB/Hunwick

I think everyone assumes that EJ needs a defensive guy, but he plays better with an offensive guy. He really hasn't shown too much offensively. He is a lot closer to Suter than Weber IMO. That is why Hejda and EJ didn't work. Hejda was actually doing more offensively than EJ when they were paired together. That is why Hunwick worked well with EJ, as did Wilson.

Well clearly, but O'Byrne is a righty too and Sacco doesn't roll like that.

Maybe he just needs the right partner and the right chance to grow into his offense. Hes still got good offensive potential in my mind.

The problem with giving him a 6 year deal is that you're gonna have to give him more money. He'll likely be a better defenseman at the end of this contract than he is now, so for every extra year, he's turning down the opportunity to be paid more.

If you're handing out a 6 year deal to him, you're probably gonna have to pay him at least $5 M. That's a bit risky, since it's not clear enough right now what level he will get to as a defenseman.

A four or five year at the most deal is best IMO. Get him on a decent salary now, and hope it's a steal in the last year or two. Then pay the man his due, and hope he still loves playing here.
