HFNHL Capitals: Ted Purcell Available

Washington is taking offers on Ted Purcell. There exists no real rush to trade him, as he's a fairly young scorer at a cost controlled rate and could potentially be part of my rebuild. However, his low cap hit of $1.1 million for the next 2 seasons makes him very attractive to teams with budget concerns. 26 years old with many strong years ahead of him.

Last season (24 G - 41 A - 65 P) he produced numbers in the NHL comparable to Brad Richards and Teemu Selanne and with his 51 point campaign from the prior year, he should be good for a strong rerate. His chemistry with Steven Stamkos makes him a strong bet to replicate his season again next year.

What we are looking for in return are prospects and picks with a higher ceiling than what Purcell currently represents. Taking back salary will also not be an issue for us provided we get the kind of assets that we want.

Just as a frame of reference, we feel that Purcell is worth two or three highly regarded prospects depending upon any number of factors. Unless the prospect you are offering is close to a sure thing, it would be expected that more than one asset be involved here. I prefer prospects to picks in many cases.

For teams that are having to disassemble for cap structure reasons, this is your perfect opportunity to grab a young up and coming winger who can immediately step into your first or second line and cost you next to nothing against the cap.

A few offers already tendered, but nothing that has "blown me away", to this point. If you have an offer in your back pocket, now would be the time!

I think it's pretty reasonable really. If you have a player that has scored 65 points last season, is in his mid 20's, and locked up for 2 years for less than $2 million a season then you have a pretty unique player by standards of this league. NHL value and value in this league can be two different things.

Many prospects we value as elite will never even touch 65 points in the NHL. I think it's fair to ask for a player or two with the upside to be as good as Purcell is one day considering where he stands on his contract.

I already have an offer or two that I would accept as well, so my price may seem high but if I am able to get it then I suppose it wasn't too high after all.

Pending approval by the league, Purcell has been dealt.
