For 2012/13 we're not piling on another huge contract and we don't have star talent banging on the door. So for this season, there IS room to overpay Gomez while watching to see if he can scramble his way back to respectability. Best case: He has a solid first half and acquires some actual trade value.
I would not be surprised if they are waiting to see if the new CBA allows for a "free" buyout like last time. If they does happen, I have this feeling he might start the year in Montreal. I just hope Bergevin is willing to take on Molson, who might not be willing to pay Gomez to be in the AHL, so that he can be sent down.
You can't be serious. Gomez playing with some of actual good players in Cole and DD? If you replace Gomez with Galchenyuk, then yes, those are cool lines.
It's not my choice (or any of our choices) to keep Gomez around. Bergevin says he'll be here for training camp. So assuming we want Gomez to succeed (and if he's part of the team, we should) he'll be given quality wingers and play an offensive role. Despite what some may believe, I think he can rebound and hit 50+ pts. Nothing insane, but something worthy of a role on this team.
I am however hoping that the new CBA offers Bergevin to buy him out without any cap reprecussions. This might change his tune.

Ready to bet it won't happen. The floor might go down as some teams are asking for it, not the ceiling. The league & the teams have their own creditors & investors. They're not going to recommend taking a risk like asking the player association for the ceiling to drop, that would just be vitriol.
Gomez is a hab until that Albatross contract is over.
Anyone know who the UFAs will be next year? Anyone interesting ones we could snap up then? Might be smart to wait for better UFAs before using Gomer's cap space.
Demote him to stay on third line duties with no PP time
The guy was given an ample amount of time last season on the PP and ES to show he can still contribute and failed so freakin badly.

you can go here to find out....alot can change though.
I'd be surprised if even a third of those guys are left come July 1st 2013. Most will likely be resigned well before.
There are a lot more than that (like Elias, Iginla, etc) but I just didn't add them cause I think it would be pointless to talk about them.
A lot of the guys above will get re-signed, yeah. Guys like Morrow, most definitely, IMO. But there are guys on that list who may not be happy with their roles (Clowe) or the direction their teams are headed (Getzlaf, Perry).
There is a lot potential there.
I would go absolutely nuts if Burrows somehow made it to free agency and wanted to come home to play in Quebec. I'm 99% sure he was a Habs fan growing up too. Hell, I wouldn't mind bringing Lapierre back with him, if they've become friends. I was never happy we got rid of Lapierre in the first place.

Personally, if I was being offered the job of GM of the Habs, I would ask for one condition: Free reign on what to do with Gomez.
I find it almost irrational to say that Gomez absolutely must not ever play for the Habs again.
It's not about kneading statistics into a loaf of logical certainty that Gomez will return to his truly true form. It's not about sympathy for the man, that poor wanderer stuck in a fast-moving modern world that's paying him millions of dollars to play a game that used to be so simple on the frozen lakes and rivers in the wilderness of Alaska.
No, it's just that the Habs have nothing to lose, at this point, in letting him play himself on or off the roster in September. Pure business. If there's a chance to improve the team before then, and that means ditching his cap hit, then say yee-haw and make it so. Until then let him compete for a job and maybe give Therrien some options.
Be good way to tank. Guy could face hostility from the crowds like nobody's business though. Unless of course he actually put in an effort every nigh.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah. I made a funny.
Strange thing is, I don't think effort is Gomez's issue. The guy still puts in effort and has his wheels. For whatever reason, what he does, just doesn't work anymore. If he does return, one of the assistants should make Gomez his personal project. Kind of like a pitcher who still throws hard, but loses his mechanics.
There is no doubt in my mind Gomez will be starting the year in Montreal
And there is Zero doubt in my mind that he will not be in Montreal. Where does he fit? fouth liner? nope. Third line? nope. That would be lunacy anyway considering they would have to flip Eller to the wing where he is not comfortable. gomez will not be returning. Wait for the new CBA

As a 3rd line center. No PP gravy for him. Play Eller on a left wing on the 3rd or 2nd line. Ask White to practice his face offs because he might play center again like in Junior hockey.

Voted no, but I have the feeling he will be playing this season. Hopefully they don't waste too much time before deciding to send him down to the minors. If things aren't going well cut him quick - we don't want that drama infecting the youngsters on the team.
