Hershey is a club with a winning history, if they came knocking and offered $300,000 each, they'd be fools to turn it down. They know they likely won't hit NHL ice.
Yeah you are right
Taffe said he could have taken a two-way, AHL-NHL contract with Hershey-Washington, but the AHL end would have been lower than what he got on the AHL-only contract. He can still sign an NHL deal if a recall to Washington is needed. “I know it’s a fair organization,” Taffe said. “They left the decision up to me and I just went for a little bit more of the guaranteed money.”
However, I wouldn't say that he has no chance to play in the NHL this year. I know it is still early in the offseason but currently the Caps only have 10 forwards under contract + 2 RFAs (Perreault and Beagle). In Hershey, the only forwards with NHL experience so far are Ryan Potulny and RFA Zach Hamill.
Zack Mckelvie who was under contract with the Bruins last season, signed a one year contract with the Abbotsford Heat.
