There is a reason no one has picked him up yet.

Burke sounded optimistic on filling the holes on this team.

No more guys circling the blueline, more guys going in straight lines.
What about the part where he identified those areas of need you were ignoring yesterday?

Or the part where he said "yes", to the question about being able to upgrade the center position?

Either way, he made it very clear that changes will be made, and the image of the team will be re-designed.

Burke made reference to goalies whose stats look better than they should because of the system that their team plays. e.g. Bryzgalov.

Wondering if he was referring to Bernier or Luongo or both.

My synopsis for anyone who didn't catch it. Not really groundbreaking stuff.

-according to media, they would say we have holes in net.

-Identifies 1C as a required area to upgrade

-Not looking for unproven goalies (Bob posed a question that was clearly referring to Bernier)

-Not done in trade/free agency

-Won't make deals to overpay for someone, and thats what a lot of others are asking (seemed to be referring to Luongo here)

-discussed his concern with long-term deal. Will not do 10 year deals. Leaves too much risk on the organization, as anything could happen in that long of period. "A general managers tenure usually doesn't last those contracts" Its leaves the next guy with an even bigger mess.

-Discussed his issues with 'cap circumventing contracts'. Taking extra years on the end of a contract, that players don't intend to honour, in order to artificially lower the cap. Clarified his positions that he is against them, and reminded that he has testified against such deals to the league

-mentions Coaching, that no one was calling for the firing of Wilson in February in a playoff spot (a lot were, IMO)
But Carlyle will not trap or be a defensive team, more of a cycling, grinding team, much more physical

-But overall belevies he can upgrade the 1G and 1C (answered with an unequivocal "yes")

-talked about not being so active July 1st, admitted past mistakes by over committing to players in the past
mentioned teams that were very active and spend, are now contacting the teams who didn't spend much, for deals relating to $

-Was actually on the phone with another team just moments before the interview.

Calgary and Colorado are the only teams that come to mind.

Also, just wanted to add: Burke sounded stressed/rushed in the interview.

- not interested in Jonathan Bernier (didn't mention him by name but that was the implication)
- won't sign a player to a long-term (i.e. 10-year) deal but doesn't object to other teams doing it
- does however object to 'cap-circumventing' contracts where the salary drops drastically towards the end, feels they will be addressed with the new CBA
- wants to get bigger guys to play Carlyle's system, JVR adds size to the top-six but we need more sandpaper
- believes we can upgrade at center, there are a number of guys available
Nothing new for the most part.
does he mean there are a number of top centers available ?

just more smoke coming out of burkes mouth. I dont think burke can significantly upgrade at C this summer without using significant assets that alot of us dont want to lose.

He was probably anxious to call that team back.

Yeah but they aren't outlawed right now are they? It's not like the NHL is gonna go back and annul these contracts. Guys like Parise don't come up to free agency very often and when they do then you gotta go for them.

Honestly attempting at least to sign Richards last season could've fixed the problem but he's stubborn.

For a number one C, anyone (including picks) is expendable outside of Kessel, Lupul, Phaneuf, and Rielly. Even Gardiner, if the C is good enough and Burke truly has faith in Rielly.

They were talking about addressing the need for a top-six center, Bob asked if there are guys even available/attainable and Burke responded with a pretty straightforward "yes."

I doubt he meant that there are a number of bona fide #1 centers available, but he seemed awfully confident that we can upgrade there.

Gardiner IMO only goes for a really high end C(Tavares, Stamkos, Duchene, Kane if he's a Centre, Getzlaf etc.)

Can't see Getzlaf as he's a UFA next year.

I can really only see this being Colorado with Stastny or O'reilly. Other than that who would deal their #1 C to us?

Yea, but you were talking about re-signing Kessel.

It seems like there are some interesting names on the trading table across the league that fans may not know about and would probably be surprised to learn just who those players may be.

And Stastny isn't a #1 C and is very overpaid.

mmm, if McClement is our 3rd line center, I see alot of depth guys going to upgrade certain positions. Still think we need a decent top 4 defensive defencemen added to the group.

I got that feeling too, that he was being rushed, He may have a deal already in place with just the paperwork/odds and ends to get through. I'm not going to move to far away from leafs tv for a while. Hopefully he doesn't do something just for the sake of doing it though.
