Brophy: "Burke has the right idea"

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/free_...e_free_agency/

i hope this brings an end to all this current Burke bashing. you have to give Burke the benefit of righting this team in a *New* season. you can't keep ripping him preemptively. he's made a few minor moves so far and we've improved as a team with each transaction.

Quote:
Instead of acting foolishly, Burke has mostly sat back and watched others overspend. Olli Jokinen is a good centre; quite possibly one the Maple Leafs could use. But not at $9 million for two years -- that's what the Winnipeg Jets gave him. In 13 seasons in the NHL, Jokinen has been to the playoffs once. Once!
Go Leafs Go!

I read this earlier today, good read. Not sure if you caught the phone calls with Bob McCown today, but Burke said he had to get off the phone to call into the station b/c GM's who spent are calling GM's who didn't. There may very well be something to this. That being said, his opinion on the terms of contracts has to change or we'll be left behind.

Go Leafs Go!

Not even winning the cup would end that.

I've said this before on this board, if we signed Jokinen he would be Connolly 2.0.

Without the injury problems, which is actually a pretty useful player.

This part of his argument doesn't stand up:
Somehow we are to believe a $9.5M 2 year contract with a more restrictive NTC for an often injured fragile centre in Connolly is a great deal.
But surprisingly a $9M 2 year contract without restrictions is a bad deal for large equally effective centre is a terrible deal?

Even when Connolly played he wasn't that good offensively. He played better with a checking roll but we didn't give him the 4.5 mill to be a checker.

Who says Connolly was a great deal?

Was that his point? It didn't seem like it here:
Quote:
After overpaying the likes of Colby Armstrong, Francois Beauchemin, Tim Connolly and Mike Komisarek, Burke was probably a little gun shy when it came to the pursuit of UFAs that might help his team.

It was the only part the OP posted. I'm not sure what he was getting at by posting that when he started the thread.

Connolly was worse signing for more dollars, a more fragile player and with NTC.
But in reality I'm not thrilled about either - they both are underwhelming players.

I didn't see the OP mention Connolly, so how is he leading you to believe that TC is a great deal?

In the article it clearly states Burke's made UFA errors in the past, but this season he's sat back and watched others make those mistakes.

In the end it's nice that Burke isn't making the same mistakes. Unfortunately just not making mistakes doesn't solve all the problems.

Think he's a bit off though that fans will be more accepting of Reimer/Scrivens being our goaltending duo compared to Bozak being our #1. He's been doing that for the past 3 years, bit late to be pressing a panic button on it now. The goaltending situation is much more frightening.

So no one said Connolly was great deal?

I think a lot of people on here will be surprised with tim connoly this year... he has the talent to be the #1 centre, it just didn't come together last year.

It was in satire - I thought that was obvious. But like I said that part of the argument doesn't work.

The whole argument is that Burke's learning from the mistakes he made in the past...so that part of the argument works.
Why not read the article before you jump into a thread on it?

I'd rather have Jokinen at 4.5 then Conolly at 4.5...

yes we can compare bad connolly and yoke contracts. unfortunately for you the yoke contract is this year and the connolly one was last year. so brophy is saying "hip hip horay for burke! he did not give in this year to the FA frenzy and desperately hand out bad contracts". so let's move on.

Burke 1
Cheveldayoff 0

I'm not arguing. I find it disengenious that the author doesn't provide more details around Connolly and Ollie deal. Sue me for adding that.

Like I wrote, both players are meh...but Ollie deal is better than Connolly.
Maybe you disagree.

oh would you?

why so?

you like his 1 appearance in the playoffs in 14 seasons?

maybe you prefer his lack of consistency.

tell us.

bb IS DOING A FINE JOB.

If you cant see how this team is comming together I suggest you start following the team then.

Rielly, Nunner, and Percy are looking awesome at the d camp. Colborne was the AHL point leader before his call up and injury. Kadri was a monster in the Play offs last year (he was also a PLUS player on a minus team) Frandson is going to be a steal this year. The team is developing the proper way.

For a team that fired Pat quinn during multiple 90 plus point seasons, Burke has had a team as bad as the Harold Ballard era, and yeah we may bottom out next year and get a lottery pick, Nothing wrong with that. AT ALL.

But I dont really think the team will be that bad. In Burke I trust, I see where this team is heading and I am excitited to be a leaf fan in about 3 seasons. Burke should still be around because he deserves it.

Play offs or no play offs, he started off with a 7-2 offsuit,

hes now playing with pocket 10's

I'd rather have one more year of Connolly at 4.5 than two more years of Jokinen at 4.5.
