Theoretical contract. If Parise is getting 8-9M in this market, Semin could easily make a case for 7. Some team eager to make a splash could go nuts and offer more.
If we're talking about Nash at 7.8 or Semin at 7 I would prefer Nash's contract.
However when you factor in assets I get how people could feel differently.

Semin isn't exactly one dimensional, he can actually play good defense for a skill player. His problem is always keeping him engaged and working hard every game, not his overall ability to play a two way game
Semin impressed me in the Bruins series. He was playing a good two way game. Against us, he was invisible, for a change.
So he's able to defend. It's just a matter of getting him to do it consistently. And he's not going to ruin the room. Otherwise, all this "chemistry" has been a lie.

I like Nash more than Semin in almost every way. But as someone else already pointed out, not giving up assets is a good thing. Bad thing is, the way this market is, how much do you think he'll want? Only thing that worries me at this point.
With Semin it comes down to contract length. Two years would be ideal. The depth this team would have if they signed him and retained Dubinsky/Anisimov/Hagelin etc.
Depth was a problem for this team in the playoffs (Along w PP and scoring).

Please. A guy with his talent should be scoring an upwards of 80-90 pts. on his own.
Honestly? Who knows. But Jagr got 4.5, PAP got 4+, Jokinen 4.5 I'm guessing Semin is in a slightly higher pay grade then they are. I would be absolutely blown away if he gets 5mil a year. I'm expecting 6. 6+?? So I think salary wise he's cheaper than Nash obviously but I feel like it would still be more than I would want to pay for Semin.

It's all about assets. Depending on who we give for Nash, It could be a terrible trade for us or a steal for a guy with a high contract but loads of skill.

Gaborik's value isn't what it normally would be for a guy who has scored 40+ goals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. His injury history is still a factor for many people. Hemsky is similar with the injuries, coming off a down year, and is not a goal scorer.
Nash? Doesn't have the injury history, but is coming off a poor season and has a bad contract. Regardless of the players he had around him, you don't trade for him based on what you think he will do with your team. You trade for him based on what he has done.
True, but you could also argue that since he is on a ZERO talent team he should be able to put up solid numbers just due to garbage goals since opponents don't always play 100% for 60 minutes when they are beating up on crappy teams.

Seems like the asking price is coming down, at least from what it was at the deadline. If the article is to be believed, it's not Slats's reluctance to deal Kreider, McD or Stepan that's holding up the deal. Leonard implies it's not even MDZ - he speculates that it's Hagelin and/or Miller.
If we're down to those players, you have to believe a deal will get done. (And if Slats can get Nash without either of THOSE two, he truly is a magician.)

Just something about him. Think he will develop to be an elite role player on any team. Excellent hockey sense, feisty (or swagger as Torts like to say), and dat speed.
Very reluctant to let him go.
