What could they give up? They traded away there best two trade chips already just trying to clear space. Columbus isn't going to want Orpik or Martin, and Kunitz, Dupuis, and Kennedy don't do anything for them. Pens don't have the assets to make a trade like that.

Lisin for Korpikoski? A loss, but Korpedo, who is a steady 3rd liner on a good team, is 26, drafted 8 years ago and has yet to crack 20 goals. Not a crippling trade to say the least.

Sather is a guy who was essentially fleeced trading Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Graves, Damphousse, Beukeboom, Lowe etc. He had no leverage back then because nobody wanted to play for Edmonton anymore. I would say he learned his lesson.

Sather is going to wear down Howson until he's a little nub before he trades any of his assets.
The Gretzky trade was more of a Peter Pocklington trade/sale; the assets acquired in that trade helped Edmonton won the Stanley Cup in 1990; Gelinas played a big role, Jimmy Carson (acquired from LA in Gretzky deal) to Detroit trade got them Petr Klima won scored the triple OT winner in game 1, Adam Graves, and Joe Murphy who all played a key role in the Oilers winning that year.

Most if not all of the above trades were money related, they couldn't afford to keep them all (how many Cups would they have won if they were able to keep that team together? Gretzky, Kurri, Coffey, Fuhr, Messier, Anderson, Lowe, etc.) and Pocklington was having money issues due to loans due to be paid to the Alberta government for his other businesses, which were going bankrupt.

I've haven't always been a Glen Sather fan, especially in his first few years as Rangers GM with trying to buy a Stanley Cup; in Edmonton in his later years there, he was hamstrung financially in keeping his teams together. It took him until the lockout to figure out that spending on big free agents doesn't always work. The Drury and Gomez signings were received positively at the time, but they didn't work out. Sather somehow got Bob Gainey to take Gomez off his hands when everyone thought his contract was untradeable, and got McDonagh who has blossomed here. Up until that point, Montreal didn't think he ever would. There has been more good than bad with Sather in recent years; (now watch him give up the farm for Nash, after I praise him! I am NOT giving up a 2013 no. 1 draft pick for him. Maybe a 2014 no. 1, depending on how good that draft is).

The Nash situation, hopefully will be settled one way or another soon after Parise/Suter sign, so we can all move on. I don't blame them for taking their time, as frustrating as it might be for fans. Would rather have one of the Anaheim 3, but that may not be as doable, especially if the price is exhorbinant. At this point, I'd rather sign Semin, trade for 1 of the Anaheim 3, just to stick it to Howson.

They do have Sutter, Tangadri, Dumunlin, Morrow, Despers, and Beneatt.

Tangradi has value? I mean Sutter, Morrow, Dumunlin, and Despres have value, but Columbus has stated they don't want defense, and Pittsburgh is going to want to keep Despres and Dumounlin as they currently don't have much defense. So that leaves their trade chips as Sutter, Tangradi, and Bennett. I mean I don't see too much value there. Dubinsky and Sutter are a wash, Tangradi is worse than any Rangers trade chips, and Bennett is good, though I feel Rangers still have way more to offer.

I won't pretend to know the Pens' system. Just seems like they might be in panic mode after dealing Staal and if they miss out on Parise.

Nash on two teams at the same time. Insanity.

I know what you were trying to say though.

I think if Howson moves Nash to Detroit he's a fool, last thing you want is your ex franchise player coming into town on a regular basis it would be too much a reminder of what used to be for the fans. Not saying it can't or won't happen I just see it as unlikely.

It's the only way Howson will get everything he's asking for.

3 of those guys are D. Columbus has D. All they have is Sutter. Bennett barely played in his sophomore year at Denver. He is not close to being NHL ready. Tangardi is a perennial prospect. AHL player.

As long as they are willing to trade Crosby and Malkin for him, sure.

I meant Parise
Duh, beer time here btw

Yeah, I agree about Nash going to Detroit would be a stupid move. Just saying it would be ideal. And Howson is pretty stupid btw too...

I think they'd be more of a player for Ryan, or, maybe they jump into the Semin fray. My belief is that Nash either becomes a Ranger or a Shark.

Oh I didn't mean to come off that way, I think it is very possible they'll try for a trade too, I just don't think Pittsburgh and Columbus are good trading partners at all. I think Bobby Ryan is a very good fit for Pittsburgh for some reason though. The number 1 and 2 pick in 05' playing with each other.

If the market dictates Parise is worth $8M, is Nash still overpaid? If so by how much?

Not saying we can/can't afford that much in our salary structure...just a value question.

Everyone boasts about the Penguins depth on D. They have used every top pick on D.

Despres-#1 in 2009
Morrow-#1 in 2010
Harrington-#2 in 2010
Pouliot-#1 in 2011(Staal trade)
Maatta-#1 in 2011
Traded for Dumoulin(Staal)

Columbus wants ready NHL forwards-2 NHL forwards

I don't know, Nash and Doan here would be pretty sweet.

Yes. But by how much? Just means that he an Parise would both be overpaid IMO.

OPTIMAL SCENARIO

Semin & Carle => Detroit
Ryan & Doan => NYR (Giving up Dubinsky, possibly AA/Hagelin, prospect + ev pick)

If they go to Minny, then huge win-win situation for us.

Parise's out of the conference, and Suter stays out of the conference.
