I would wager they are just taking a shot at Parise as plan A, if that doesn't work, then Doan for plan B, and if the stars don't align for either, consider a stopgap/insurance player on a short term deal (i.e. a Ponikarovsky type of signing) and go into the season. Kings don't really have to worry about much, they are icing an entire Stanley Cup winning roster.
Penner is our "Ponikarosky" type, the Kings don't need to sign anyone else. Nolan, King, Richardson, Clifford and Westgarth are all subject to waivers. Kings must send at least one of them down, my guess is Westgarth.
The rumored Suter contract on the table is ridiculous. His career high in points is 46 and that's with Weber as his partner. He'll go back to being a 35-39 point defensemen this season but he'll be getting paid like he IS Weber.
