Next Winter Classic

Place your bets kids:

Minnesota VS. Dallas (or Colorado)

You heard it here first. Minny bought themselves a WC today.

But in all seriousness, yeah I could see Minnesota being in the 2014 Winter Classic now.

Haha I figured just had to mess with ya. I'd say Colorado at Minnesota would be epic. Either at Target field or University of Minnesota stadium.

I would love to see a game be played here even if it isn't the NHL winter classic. Just a regular season game between Flyers and Pens in a 110,000 capacity stadium. Technically slightly closer to Pittsburgh but I have faith that the Flyers fans would make it seems like a home game.

Flyers versus Penguins needs to happen, that would be a ratings bonanza. Too bad both teams just had Winter Classics... but I'm sure if the NHL could make big bucks off of it, they wouldn't care and would let them have one in 2014.

I was just on the Mitchell & Ness site and ordered a bunch of 2012 WC gear. Shirts are $12 and hoodies $31. Not too shabby!

Do you guys really want to have winter classic every couple of years? That ruins the fun of it and is unfair for the rest of the league. I personally hope it's at least 5 years until we're considered again. Of course, Flyers/Pens at Beaver Stadium needs to happen at that point.

Minnesota I thought was going to get it this year. My guess is Minny vs. Colorado, Washington, or a Cali team. Hopefully they do it at U of M's stadium instead of Target Field. I really think playing in a baseball stadium is not as nice as when it has been in a football stadium.

Yeah, I agree. I thought it was stupid to have it last year (although it was still pretty cool). We shouldn't have had it last year and Detroit shouldn't have it this year (but again, this year is still going to be pretty sweet).

NBC is going to dictate the teams, and there's only so many marketable ones. Pens/Flyers at beaver would be epic, like a euro soccer hooligan match, 100k fans equally numbered, full of hate and beer. That stadium during a big football game is just unreal loud.

I've heard the NHL was thinking somewhere in the mid-west...possibly St.Louis or Colorado would work.

Apparently Miami's new baseball stadium can be enclosed and theoretically support an ice rink. If the Panthers get a bankable star on their roster in the not-too-distant future I wouldn't be surprised to see a WC there, though probably not the year after next year. The WC concept is getting a little stale, but having one in a warm weather climate would be a (marketable) spectacle.

...wouldn't having it in an enclosed baseball stadium essentially defeat the concept of the winter classic? It then technically would not be outdoors, and would therefore be pretty dumb. I doubt you'll ever see any southern or warm climate teams involved in or hosting a winter classic.

Any winter classic will likely always involve one of the Flyers, Penguins, Red Wings, Blackhawks, Bruins, Canadiens, Maple Leafs or Rangers. There really is no reason for the league to venture outside of those because it's a marketing ploy, and there is really no benefit, profit or business value otherwise.

I personally think it'd be cool to have a Canucks vs. Rangers winter classic in Vancouver... But I fear what would happen to the city should they lose...

Oilers vs Kings.

I'd love to see Hartford vs Winnipeg - throw back jerseys.

I work in State College and see many more Flyer fans then Penguin fans.

Pitt/Philly would be great there, but I don't see that happening for at least another 4 seasons. Both teams have played in the winter classic more then any other team out there. Playing it in Minnesota next season would be great if they have a good year and then you play them again Vancouver.

No offense but didn't the lightning play a few seasons in the Trop? That didn't seem all that cool... I think they should try to do Stanley cup rematches occasionally

It has a retractable roof. They apparently can close the building off, air condition the heck out of it to make the ice, and then open the roof when the game starts.
