Dead Wings Era 2.0

I started a thread here like two years ago, predicting a new era of total suckage. At that point I got laughed off the stage - but revisiting the topic now with todays two huge signings from Minnesota & Lidstrom gone...this team looks awful.

Detroit has been my team ever since I started watching the NHL in the mid 90s, and as much as it hurts to admit it - our future is looking bleek. Especially considering we've had no great drafts the last 8-10 years. Our best prospects are projected as perhaps decent second liners, most third, fourth and not good enough for the NHL at all.

What do you think. Have I been/am I overly pessimistic, or do we have a new Dead Wing Era on our hands?

I mean, what will our line-up look like the upcoming season?

The red wings will be fine. The off season isn't even over and say worst comes to worst they use their current line up (assuming they sign Quincey and Abdelkader) I think they'll still be a playoff team. They have some real good prospects who could turn into Datsyuk 2.0 (Jurco/Nyquist) Zetterberg 2.0 (Jarnkrok) and have plenty of other great ones in Sproul, Oullett, Tvrdon, Pulkkinen, Sheahan. They won't be the dead wings for 20+ years

You aren't allowed to be realistic and bring up concerns in here?

Go away, all you so-called "fans." Seriously, we don't need all these doom and gloom, faux fans.

This is what the cap does to a team who was extremely successful not that long ago...

Amen. Have some faith for crying out loud.

We still have two of the top 10 players in the league, a top coach and some of the best hockey minds in the world sitting in our front office. Not too mention, committed owners.

The fact that we have Nyquist and Smith is enough to keep me sane and relatively optimistic.

I just don't get what's the point. Is the front office going to majorly restructure itself because people on HFBoards are concerned about their decisions?

Nyquist is overrated and replaceable by other prospects in the organization, Smith might have a bright future but he's still a rookie and make tons of mistake and probably will continue with that for several seasons.

What has the cap done to Detroit? The Red Wings have enough cap space to massively improve their current roster. The offseason has just begun, albeit it did not start good at all.

The cap has made all teams equal, do you think minnesota would have made these two signings in the year 2001?

I dont see the Wings becoming the Dead Wings, but Calgary 2.0 is looking very likely. Maybe the prospects ALL pan out, but what are the odds of that?
