Stastny would likely only be moved for a top pairing defenseman.

This deal gives the Avalanche far too many top-9 left wingers (Landeskog/McGinn/Kulemin/MacArthur) while not helping them at all on defense.

It's not the worst deal in the world, but all it does is give Colorado more of what they already have: depth up front. Kulemin, MacArthur, and Colborne are not much different from guys like Downie, McGinn, and Jones.

To sum, the motivation for each team:
Colorado has too many top 6 centers and Stastny's value is low. They trade to acquire a player who could become a top6/9 center so that their not wasting a top 6 player in a top 9 role.
Toronto is willing to "gamble" that a "elite playmaking point producer prior" who is still" young" will set them up for 5+ years.

I like it.

3) Yeah a top LW is a need for them I agree.
Colorado has been happiest when keeping 3 strong centers in their line-up since the side moved from Quebec (they won the '96 cup with Sakic-Foppa-Ricci-Yelle and '01 with Sakic-Foppa-Drury-Yelle).

Stop it.

The Avs have been able to build up a great core at the C position. They aren't trading that away, period.

Frattin:
-18 months younger than Kulemin
-10 goals in 13 games (and 3 assists) in the 2012 AHL playoffs
-14 goals in 23 games in the 2012 AHL regular season
-2011 Player of the Year in the WCHA, First All-Star Team

I think Frattin has more trade value than Nik.

As others have said, our main need is a #2 defense man and a good top six sniper.

Drury/Forsberg played on the same line in '01, just saying. Steven Reinprecht, a rookie, was the fourth line C while Stephane Yelle was the number three C.

Stastny for Gardiner? Stastny for Rielly?

As a Leafs fan I would consider it.

Colorado Avalanche acquire:
C Joe Colborne, 22, $0.875M x 1
W Nikolai Kulemin, 26, RFA
W Clarke MacArthur, 27, $3.25M x 1

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire:
C Paul Stastny, 26, $6.6M x 2
W Milan Hejduk, 36, $2.0M x 1 (Colorado's option to include him or not)

--------------------------
Colorado:
-Stastny, Duchene and O'Reilly gives Colorado three top-2 centers.
-Stastny has had back-to-back disappointing seasons (0.72PPG, previous 4 seasons 0.96PPG)
-Colorado adds youth, grit and a solid prospect who can play 2nd/3rd line center for 10+ years.

Toronto:
-Takes a gamble on Stastny with a high cap hit and average numbers the last two seasons. But he was an elite playmaking point-producer prior to that and is still young.
-Gives up a good prospect in Colborne, but with Stastny and Grabovski the Leafs are set at center for the next 5 years.

Colorado Avalanche:
Landeskog Duchene Parenteau
Jones O'Reilly Downie
MacArthur Colborne Kulemin
McGinn Mitchell Kobasew

Toronto Maple Leafs:
Lupul Stastny Kessel
JVR Grabovski Frattin
Kadri McClement Hejduk
Brown Steckel Lombardi

I'll give you an A for effort ... and as much as we need a legit number 1 center...we need a legit stud 6,4 230 lb 80-100 pt center...and Stastny is not that guy.

In which case maybe this whole trade should just be Kadri and Frattin for Stastny.
You just don't get it. Avs still give up the better players, so it doesn't make sense.

*scans offer*

Top pairing defensman[X]

Elite top line scoring winger[X]

Nope, no thanks.

*waits for some Leaf fan to say "ZOMG, Stastny sucks. Bozak>Stastny. Your crazy!! He will never get that in return!! Stastny's contract sucks(who cares if you guys don't care about it) At best he is a #2 C!!! Bozak, Komisarek, Colborne is fair value "*

Thank you.

Stastny, from what I have seen, plays more like a 6'2, 200lb center. Has had some great seasons (0.98, 0.95, 1.08 points per game - 75-85 points)

It's next to impossible to get a guy like you're describing.

Stastny is so good. He's better than any center the Leafs have. And better than any of their prospects project to be. I just wish nobody else saw that.

Good luck finding that...6.4, 230 Ib centers who can put up around 90 points either A) Don't exist or B) Will cost a kings ransom, even if their team would even consider moving them.

Frattin is 24. Kulemin is 25. He has scored 30 goals in the NHL being 24. You are the only person on the planet who thinks he has more trade value than Kulemin, even after the last 7 goal season.

Not sure why Avs fans are making negative comments here.. leafs get hosed with a trade like this.. PS is OVERRATED! OVERPAID!!

Fellow Leafs fans, I know we need a 1st line centre but not one that would be a 2nd line centre tops on any contending team! Want to do proposals - start with Getzlaf threads!!

How surprising.

A leafs fan is putting down Stastny after a laughable offer gets rejected. Really did not see that coming.

Newsflash: The only way you get Getzlaf is via UFA. And I don't see that happening.

You do not even have the assets to get Stastny.

How on earth can you believe you can make a reasonable offer for Getzlaf?

If you don't want to hear negative comments, perhaps Leafs fans should stop posting ridiculous rumors.

I'll start a Getzlaf thread.

HE'S NOT AVAILABLE!!!!

Lock thread.

Well that was easy.

4th is too much, we're already getting our top pairing defenseman in Komisarak. 7th is more then enough.
