This deal gives the Avalanche far too many top-9 left wingers (Landeskog/McGinn/Kulemin/MacArthur) while not helping them at all on defense.
It's not the worst deal in the world, but all it does is give Colorado more of what they already have: depth up front. Kulemin, MacArthur, and Colborne are not much different from guys like Downie, McGinn, and Jones.
To sum, the motivation for each team:
Colorado has too many top 6 centers and Stastny's value is low. They trade to acquire a player who could become a top6/9 center so that their not wasting a top 6 player in a top 9 role.
Toronto is willing to "gamble" that a "elite playmaking point producer prior" who is still" young" will set them up for 5+ years.

2) I thought about that, he was drafted by Quebec in 1994. Has seen ups, downs, and Cups. I can't see him ever wanting to move now.

Colorado has been happiest when keeping 3 strong centers in their line-up since the side moved from Quebec (they won the '96 cup with Sakic-Foppa-Ricci-Yelle and '01 with Sakic-Foppa-Drury-Yelle).
Drury/Forsberg played on the same line in '01, just saying. Steven Reinprecht, a rookie, was the fourth line C while Stephane Yelle was the number three C.
Looking for thoughts on this. Would Colorado do this? Would Toronto? Does this actually help both clubs long term? Would any other team step up and pay more than this for Stastny?

-Stastny, Duchene and O'Reilly gives Colorado three top-2 centers.
-Stastny has had back-to-back disappointing seasons (0.72PPG, previous 4 seasons 0.96PPG)
-Colorado adds youth, grit and a solid prospect who can play 2nd/3rd line center for 10+ years.
Toronto:
-Takes a gamble on Stastny with a high cap hit and average numbers the last two seasons. But he was an elite playmaking point-producer prior to that and is still young.
-Gives up a good prospect in Colborne, but with Stastny and Grabovski the Leafs are set at center for the next 5 years.

Okay. Looks like real quickly it's clear that Avs fans aren't liking this deal at ALL.
What if it is:
Nazem Kadri, Matt Frattin, Clarke MacArthur
Kadri is a better prospect than Colborne, Frattin is viewed as higher potential than Kulemin.
In which case maybe this whole trade should just be Kadri and Frattin for Stastny.

Stastny, from what I have seen, plays more like a 6'2, 200lb center. Has had some great seasons (0.98, 0.95, 1.08 points per game - 75-85 points)
It's next to impossible to get a guy like you're describing.

Good luck finding that...6.4, 230 Ib centers who can put up around 90 points either A) Don't exist or B) Will cost a kings ransom, even if their team would even consider moving them.

Frattin is 24. Kulemin is 25. He has scored 30 goals in the NHL being 24. You are the only person on the planet who thinks he has more trade value than Kulemin, even after the last 7 goal season.

A leafs fan is putting down Stastny after a laughable offer gets rejected. Really did not see that coming.
Newsflash: The only way you get Getzlaf is via UFA. And I don't see that happening.

the asking price on Stastny is Bozak, Komisarek, and a 4th. If you Leafs fans don't want to give up that package fine, but this is the asking price and not a penny less. We need established top-line talent coming back, not scrubs and salary dumps and mid picks.
4th is too much, we're already getting our top pairing defenseman in Komisarak. 7th is more then enough.
