This matters more with aging players than anything. It's why a guy like Ray Whitney, who relies on smarts, is still around and scoring consistently, whereas a guy whose game was built on speed (maybe Brian Rolston, who was taken in the same draft?) may struggle to maintain. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, players lose a step as they age.
