Around The League - Hockey is back!

Doesn't seem like anyone is going to sign Jason Blake with him being 39 in September. Is he going to announce his retirement or what? I do think though he has some juice left.

He could probably be a 4th line energy winger somewhere, but I think teams would rather try out a prospect in that role. And unlike an equally old Knuble, he doesn't have the size that teams could be looking to add for their 4th line. I think Blake is unlikely to land a contract somewhere to be honest. Cudos to him if he does though.

It's only been a few days. Not to mention the CBA uncertainty, and the likelihood that there'll be some holdouts and some training camp injuries that could open a spot for him later in the summer. I'd wait, if I were Blake.

If he wanted to stay in the organization, I wouldn't mind giving him a good AHL contract. Maybe let him know that he'll have a job in our organization if he retires. Blake was a good guy.

Yeah, other than Anaheim (with Suter at least) I'm glad they went to a team like the Wild, as opposed to Detroit or Pittsburgh. I like both those teams, but the Wild actually need those guys.

Wild's odds to win the cup instantly went from 100-1 to 20-1.

Looking like Carle to TB, according to Dregs. Can't wait to see what kind of money he gets.

especially if they're paying 6 million as Zapp suggests.

edit: sounds like Tampa Bay is signing Carle.

I think it'll be closer to what Garrison made; most likely a little more.

Ouch. $5.5M is a lot to pay a 4th defenseman. Tampa did desperately need a defenseman though.

Tampa did pay a lot, but it could work for them. We always look at the individual merit of a player who is to be signed or traded but some players tend to perform better with the right partner, that is where they really shine. Depending on his d partner, he may be well worth the dollars. But he could stink up the state of Florida as well.

I think he'll do well, and Tampa did need some help.

And what about those bogus last 3 years on their contracts ? Looks like cap circumvention to me

Hopefully the next CBA will eliminate the average salary scam against the cap. A team's salary budget against the cap should equal salary outlay in any given year. If you want to sign players to a $10M +12M signing bonus in the first year, then all the money should count against the current year cap

I do know that the cap hit in the end should be the sum of all years + sum of all signing bonus divided by the term. In other words, everything is averaged out.

Looking at that page, if you total out the "NHL salary" column, it adds up to 98 million, and 98 million / 13 = the 7.538. Making it look like the signing bonus is not counted. But it is counted. So that must mean in year 1 he makes 2 million salary and 10 million signing bonus.

Which is actually kind of expected, considering the possiblity of a lockout. That way he gets paid even if there is a lockout.

What you say makes sense, but then why do they list $12M as "NHL Salary"? Salary isn't the same as bonus. Or certainly shouldn't be.

But even if the bonus is part of the 12M it is still a crazy contract that very few teams can offer. Without a doubt it is cap circumvention, but likely within the previously established allowable limits. Still BS.

The bonus is part of the $12M. And yeah, it's blatant cap cirumvention but anyone that wants to sign one of the top guys has to do it nowdays.

These contracts are another example of owners needing to be saved from themselves. Most are disasters and even when the player is still good (Luongo) you just can't predict the future and how a team's plans can change, leaving them in a bind with a contract almost nobody else wants. But I fehr (pun intended) the PA won't give in easily. I'm beginning to smell a lockout.
