Salo at almost any price would be a worse contract for the Ducks than Souray's, because Salo doesn't fill any need here.

He was overplayed last year and should not be getting top pairing minutes, it showed at times. Beauchemin should be a very good 2nd pairing d-man. Brookbank was the most solid because unlike everyone else he actually was in a proper role.

Yeah, Beauch is out of his depth as a top-pairing guy when he's not paired with an elite partner. He's still very effective, but I think he wouldn't accumulate so many errors if he was slotted a little lower. He reminds me of Carney in that respect.

Here's hoping that Fowler becomes that elite partner for him this year.

So I just looked at Souray's twitter. Is he dating model Kelly Kelly? Well done sir. Would love to see her at a few games.

He sure is, she's actually probably the most positive thing about this signing for me.

I agree actually. Would be great to see that (hopefully) Allen could take some of the work from his shoulders.

I hope he at least takes a large step forward unlike last year's regression. He is certainly capable.

This is what I don't like most about the Souray signing (aside from contract length), we really need a minutes eater to slot everyone back a bit from playing out of their role last season. I don't see Souray helping in that regard. Allen helps a little but not enough as just another generic middle of the road rotational guy.

I don't think Fowler regressed at all. He was put in much larger role than previous year.

Murray got a bit of praise for this signing on the latest Marek vs. Wyshysnki.

They like that we added someone mean on the back end, and they felt that most of the people calling him a waste on defense have no idea what they are talking about. They think him playing near his kids will be a good motivator.

Souray even said that much himself. Says he plays much better when he is around his family.

He averaged a minute more of ice time last season. Took the same amount of shots, scored half the goals and defensively was repeatedly beaten by more than just the superstars. He looked confused. This year, I believe he'll get back to where he was his rookie season, but in the 3rd year I was frankly looking for more progress than that.

That might have been a little too ambitious for a 20 year old defenseman who's been learning on the job.

I agree, which then goes back to my point about bringing in defensemen who can eat up minutes and slot guys back a bit from taking on too much. Souray can't do that from the infirmary.

Full circle!

Yeah, Souray's likelihood of injury is problematic. Still, he will help the problem when he's in the lineup, he was the best grit/shot guy on the market, and having him means we won't have to rely on a kid to take those minutes. We can work one in if/when Souray goes down, in sheltered minutes.

I'm talking about playing 1st pairing vs. playing 2nd pairing, and you're talking about stats. Overall, he was better this season than in a rookie season, just played tougher minutes, and concentrated solely on improving his defense.

Seriously, you were expecting more progress? Show me a player starting his 2nd year in a league at the age of 19 while being handed 1st pairing role and averaging over 23 minutes per game.

He should not be playing 1st pairing minutes, he's not ready and it is destroying his confidence and our lack of minute eating defensemen can only stunt his progression. It showed last season. Florida did the same thing with Bouwmeester...

Just watch the games, he did regress defensively, whether that is a byproduct of being thrust into a less than optimal situation for his growth or not, it happened.

I'm not opposed to signing Souray but that's too much considering the risk involved in letting him play, and also the fact that he's made it known he wants to play in this conference I bet we could have gotten him much cheaper than we did, but then again what do I know.

I do think he's pretty bad defensively, I've got to see him play quite a lot when I lived in Edmonton. He is tough though which might be something we need, I just hope and pray that he doesn't get injured 5 games into the season.
