Before free agency began I was pretty concerned overall about the willingness of the club to be aggressive in building a team capable of winning in the short-term. They were committed to success years down the road, yes, but I was apprehensive about seeing any aggressive plays to grab the assets we needed in early July to produce a team capable of making the playoffs now.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised by an aggressive effort to sign a player like Alexander Semin.
With all the talk about Semin's attitude and work ethic do you guys really see Chevy trying to pursue him?
I'm not saying I know the guy personally but it seems like a decent amount of credible people are leaning towards that direction. He'd be a nice talent to add for sure and one that's much needed but if the rumors are true I'd like to just steer clear of that whole mess.

Working on details. Matt Carle is closing in on a deal with Tampa Bay Lightning.

One thing I think that's working in favour of trying to shake the stigma of those rumours is the fact that Semin is still not in the KHL. I'm sure he's aware that it would be tough to get an NHL contract based on the opinion of him around the league, and he hasn't gone for the huge payday in the KHL yet.

No, but I didn't see Chevy being active at all in free agency other than a bunch of moves for character players who can fill role positions. We'll see what develops regarding Semin.
nah that's an office post. Any errors are due to my own faults (besides lazyness...as in lazyness is an excusable fault when posting from my phone).
Wild's going to be scary in a year or two. Just in time for a big realignment that will probably end up with us in the same division as them and the Oilers...great...just great...
If the NHL sticks with the previously proposed realignment, the Jets won't be in the same division, sorry "conference" as the Oilers. Their "conference" will be Detroit, Nashville, Chicago, St Louis, Dallas, Columbus and Minnesota. Nobody else seems to agree with me on this, and I do recognize the different time zones are significant, but it still really sucks. Would much rather get a heavy dose of the Oilers, Flames and Canucks, but instead get the Blue Jackets, Stars, Preds and Blues each at least 3 times a year. Woooo...
And the lunacy continues. Olli was a bit of an overpay but at 2 years and the need he fills it makes complete sense.
Giving 33MM to Matt Carle is just poor management.
I agree.
My opinion is that it's hard to have a bad 1 or 2 year contract. On 1 or 2 years as a fan I give the GM full liberty to overpay the **** out of whoever it is. It doesn't really affect the team long-term.
The Carle deal could absolutely bite them in the ass at some point.

That D was horrible last season though. Credit to Yzerman for trying to improve it, at least. Carle is an improvement on what they had last season, but the term is the horrible part here, I agree. They don't have much coming up the pipe, though, d-wise.
Carle played the waiting game very well (or at least his agent did). I'm sure we'll see a bunch of guys go for more than they should now that the big 2 are off the market.
I think Yzerman is turning out to be one of the more overrated GM's in the league.
The guy inherited a pretty damn good team (Lecavalier, St. Louis, Stamkos) and hasn't really improved them that much. I know they were a game away from the SCF, but I attribute that more to Roloson playing out of his mind.
I would give Semin 12MM over 2 years with a 1MM signing bonus. Not sure if that would get it done but again, that takes us to a point where Burmistrov should be a contributing force, and Scheifele and Telegin are also meanigful parts of the team.
IMO Semin doesn't fit into our hard working character type of player. We can always chase a better free agent next year if we find we're still lacking.
Today on 1260 said "he's not done yet, to any stretch of the imagination". I believe that Chevy will target a journey man defenseman via free agency and will target teams seeking a top 4/puck moving defenseman. If I'm Chevy I'm on the horn with ken holland tangling enstrom, since they missed out on suter and carle.

He said a journeyman top four D. I think we could move Enstrom easily, his value may be the highest right now. Trade Enstrom for a good solid defense first D man to pair with buff plus a pick our way. Or go young with no pick.
