Why wouldn't Mueller even be qualified? Is he still injured or what?

If he is healthy, he is well worth a contract. With Sid he could put 60+ points. He is gifted.
He would be a great addition.

Concussion issues could still be there. He hasn't played a whole lotta hockey the past couple seasons.

Lot of time left before the playoffs and trade deadline. Let's take a deep breath everyone.
All that needs said. If they don't address these issues early (At least one) I'm putting them on a two year plan.

Orpik, Letang
Martin, ?/Niskanen
?/Depres/Strait/Bortuzzo, Engelland

Is not gonna get them to the promise land. They need two D-man this year, and that's considering them keeping, Martin.

Yeah, it just gives me some pause. He was a high pick and is really skillful. Just seems to me that if he was close to getting out of the woods injury-wise they'd at least qualify him.

Hows our D worse? Martin had his first down in how long? Michalek? can't get anyworse with Despres. Despres would likely be better next season then Michalek was last season. Our offense is not worse unless Crosby is out again, we will have Crosby all season likely.

Their forward lineup is all but set. No need to take a risk on him.

I'd be sold if he was a better skater. That seems to be the major knock on him. He's a talented guy though, no doubt. Can help us out as a RHS on the PP.

I'm not that worried about the defense as it seems to be a system issue and not a personnel issue. Plus, we have that glut of prospects waiting in the wings should someone falter. Offense, we have last years top scoring team minus Staal and Sully while adding hopefully a full year of the best player in the world and Sutter.

Nope, sky isn't falling after all.

So **** it. Go, Shero... Go get Ryan and Stewart!
I endorse this post. Got cap space and weaknesses and a tone of defensive prospects. Get something done.

OK folks, I'm checking out for a few days here to catch up on the real world. Some of the alarmism / knee-jerk-ism in here is insane. We addressed the Staal situation well and we're without Michalek, yet have 8 D ready to play in the NHL, maybe 9. We'll see at camp.

I'm not satisfied but the reality is we could do nothing until the deadline and still have a team capable of putting up 110 pts if Sid stays healthy. People are letting their emotions hold sway over their brains.

We're a playoff team. This team is set up worse than this past postseason offensively.

You're using the wrong word. We don't NEED to give Sid anything. He can, and will, be the best player on Earth centering Kunitz and Dupuis.

What we do need, however, is to get harder to play against defensively.

Staal to Sutter is going to hurt a bit in terms of offense, but I don't know if we're going to see a significant drop off in terms of defense. Staal wandered away from being a shutdown, PK specialist in his last couple of seasons here, and it showed. He was no longer the Selke-caliber guy he used to be. If Sutter is happy being a defensive guy, I think we'll be fine. We just have to adjust how we play teams.

Agreed. But I am still a fan of landing Muller for cheap on a 1 year deal. With the cap space it would be nice for some more fire power and role players.

Sid is coming off a year where he just got over a concussion, took a 60 million dollar discount so we can ice a better team for the term of that 12 year contract, and people on here don't think we need to get him a longterm linemate?

Losing Staal drastically changes the way we produce, especially in tight checking hockey. I'm not going to put all my hopes and dreams in Sid going into god mode with garbage around him and Sutter being a playoff beast.

We have the assets to get him some help, so do it Ray.

I'm not righting them off, only stating you're not gonna be 100% off the bat. There are things like learning curves and the amount of time to get through those curves. Our defense with them could be two seasons out from being a well oiled corps.

Have we done what we needed to do to improve this roster enough to come out on top again?

IMHO, no. Not yet.

I honestly don't see any Top 4 FA's on the market...don't see who we could trade for either.

I hope Niskanen develops a little more this season. I was very impressed with his play this year compared to the previous year. Hope he continues to progress and fills the Top 4 hole.

Engelland is a nice guy to have in the bottom pairing...hopefully he remains consistent.

I had a nice long post all set up...but the close thread f-ed it. Basically I was made that we don't have any insurance in the pipeline since we missed out on Parise.

Sutter+a healthy Crosby=more offense then 50 points of Staal. Staal is more offensive then Sutter, but between Sutter and 50 more games of Crosby=greater.

We really need a right hander. Mueller and Doan are the only fits there. As of now only right handed option on PP1 is TK. Sully used to be "that" guy but he could lug the puck up the ice too.

ETA: Can Hornqvist play there?

I don't think anyone is...I think everyone is realistic about the time frame.

Despres is ready. No one else is...yet. Its gonna take awhile for them to come to fruition. In the meantime...we have holes. Quite a few holes.

We're also down Sully, don't forget. He was a good contributor. I think that was pretty dumb to just let him walk. It's not like his 1.5 salary was going to hurt anything.

I don't see Nashville trading Hornqvist anytime soon, and he's not someone that lugs the puck up the ice.
