I'm happy to see him stay. He made the right decision. Edmonton should be his home and be reasonable in his contract demands shows some give on his side.
He needs an actual haircut

I hope we have another winger to eventually replace him.

Reading through here sounds like those concerned are worried about him taking the place of a kid. Don't worry there will be injuries atsome point during the season. Having dpeth is a godo thing.
Good signing, Edmonton (if nothing else) should be entertaining this season.

Happy with the term, happy with the price, and happy to keep Smyth on the Oilers.

I can't understand the negativity surrounding Ryan Smyth. One of the most popular players to ever play in Edmonton, has once again given up money to play in Edmonton. We can't play a team of 18-23 year olds and expect to get anywhere; they need some leadership, and an ambassador for the team and city. Signing him also shows the young guys that the franchise has some loyalty to players that show loyalty back.

And by the way, It may not exactly be apples to apples, but a 40 year old Jagr is said to be asking for $4M+, and scored the same number of goals last year as Smyth (19). 35 year old Shane Doan scored 22 goals, and there seems to be plenty of interest in him.

Exactly and smyth didnt always get to play with the offensive players on the oilers, he had a very limited role near the end. 46 points in 82 games.. that fairly good for a 3rd liner. him, horcoff, and jones will make a good shut down line, with slight offensive upside.

Are you kidding? He got to play with the Oilers kids WAY, WAY too much, even long after his offense dried up.

That's why strongly limiting him to a third line role and finding a better option for the 2LW hole were/are discussion points right now.

Absolutely mortified that we resigned him. He's not effective on the third line and will complain when he's not getting 17+ mins a night. Yes I do understand we need more vets, but we also need hungrier players with more energy. Smyth really died down last year with the heavy minutes, but he also showed us his complete lack of drive we were used to many years ago.

Not a happy panda

Unreal foolish judgment by this poster.

That deal is amazing for a responsible forward who can chip in 20.

not happy at all. smyth is useless. can't play defense, can't score past november, can't stick handle, can't shoot....he is not an nhl player.

i honestly think speed is what wins at the NHL level. Especially speed with size. Smyth has size, but i"m not sure he is fast enough to be useful in the new NHL.

Ha, ha. That is what I read about him in his draft year

There were a lot of good things written about him, but a lot of doubts based on the same criteria you are mentioning.

If there are kids who can do Smyth's job, then let them step up and take the job away from him.

Until then, Smyth is better than anyone else we have on the LW outside of Hall.

At 2.25 million if there is a kid that can take Smyth's job, more power to them.

So smyth is Jesus now...the Oilers Messiah...

I have no problem provided he understands his place in the locker. This is the kids team and he is an after thought. As is horcoff, Belanger, and sadly for me, even hemsky. I just hope he is played properly.

Rather than starting a new thread, I thought I'd just bump up this one (mods i'm not sure if thats what im supposed to do?)

I know its still early on in the season but so far Smyth has been pretty disappointing. I've always wanted to root for Captain Canada but I think he is really turning oiler fans against him now with his recent play. He's been slow, making lazy plays, and the worst thing about it is that he complains to the refs all the time about legitimate penalties called against him. I know he's a seasoned veteran, but he has to play by the rules like everyone else. I really think his selfish play is hurting the oilers (although this is definitely not the only problem currently on this team.) In my opinion he should sit a few games out.

Just wondering what everyone thinks about his re-signing last year after his first few games in.

No, no it's not. It's a terrible contract to a useless player who's done.

Are you kidding me?

Horcoff was doing just fine this year, and Hemsky has been one of the bright lights of offense for a team that hasn't been able to score.

Smyth has been taking ridiculous penalties and costing this team.

Huge difference.

Smyth took two penalties in the time it took you to type that.
