Ahh.. breaking news.

Rest easy, MPPiN: "He is expected to sign an Amateur Tryout contract with the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL) to finish the rest of this season."

I'm really kinda bummed about this. I wanted to see one more year outta him and Potulny. Do you think this will affect Kessel's decision? I heard he was likely to stay on campus this year.

This is disappointing as a Gopher fan, but it's probably in Irmen's best interest to develop at Houston. I can't say I fault him for not coming back, even in the wake of the Holy Cross fiasco.

As for Kessel, I'd say it depends on who grabs him. I think he's most likely to stick around for another year; Lucia has said previously stated that Kessel has already been talking about getting a house off campus with some of his teammates, and it sounded like he was looking forward to next season at the U.

But if the right team grabs him, and the offer is right, I wouldn't be shocked to see him leave.

Meltdown

Maybe the Gophers melted down at end of the season because guys knew these contracts were waiting for them when it was over. Kessel is a great talent, but he was not especially dominate at the college level and has much to gain by at least another year there. He wasn't anything like Vanek when he looked like "a men amongst boys" in his last year with Minnesota.

Totally different with Vanek though. Kessel will stay. Maybe the wild will draft Okposo and we can have another future wild on the gophers.

Irmen will be missed on the Gophs.... Look at the bright side though, one year in Houston, and he's back in Minnesota... Hopefully.

Realistically, I think spend next year in Houston, get a call-up near the end of the season, and then make the team in 2007... but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in St. Paul next year.

I don't know - you think O'Sullivan would had gotten a call up this year with the season he's had, but no. I don't think it would be any different next season, unless injuries strike pretty deep.

DR said something to the effect of 'I've said I'll call up some of the AHL vets like Westrum and Law, they deserve a shot at the NHL'. We've seen Westrum and now Reitz get called up. That's my understanding of why PO'S hasn't been called up. I think he'll make the team out of camp next fall ... unless of course he gets injured again.

I think it's gonna take Danny more than a half of a season to get called up, circumstances aside. His two-way ability is gonna get him in St. Paul, not his scoring. Playing defense and backchecking in the NHL is ALOT different than in college and he has alot to learn. I see a different game from him in the AHL than with the Gophers and I don't think the Wild are looking to play him on the 1st line. Whether he ends up there is up to him.

I say 2 years, with a callup or two depending on key injuries.

While it's nice to see a guy from my high school get a chance at the NHL, Irman is at least 2 years away, and as such should have stayed with the (hated) Gophers one more year. He doesn't have a chance in hell of making the team next year, so why not stay with the Goofs and try to remedy their problems? I guess its just like when he couldn't win a state title in Fargo, so he switched to Grand Forks, won, then left to the USHL. He's a puss, just out for himself! He'll quit on the Wild within 3 years, too.

Playing a full season against grown men will do a lot more for his development as a player than staying in college. AHL seasoning is just what the doctor ordered.

So in other words he's only averaging 40 points a season? At the AHL level?

Cripes, the kid's a bust. I can't believe they wasted a draft pick on him.
