Oates a truly great player

I got a rather unexpected opportunity to watch the Oilers-Avs game on friday from Row 5 in the gold seats. What really caught my attention is the way Oates plays the game. Telling players what to do and where to go before a faceoff, winning the faceoffs. His passes are really something else. Out PP actually managed to get set up in the Avs zone and have some pressure, and it was due to Oates. When he gets the puck on the PP he isn't mob rushed like everyone else. he is respected for his pass, but also his very underrated shot. Opposing teams and players respect him, and that gives him the chance to work. Even at 41 he can play, too bad that this is probably his last year. The Oilers lost against the Avs, but with Oates in the lineup, they'll win more that they'll lose. his sole presence makes opponents respect this team.

My first post on HF btw. Used to be on Oilfans, but no more.

Welcome, SerbianEagle, glad to have you and thanks for the game report. One thing I found interesting about Oates is how he said in several interviews that he didn't want to make a fool of himself by going out too early. Shows alot of pride and leadership, and on a team where everyone plays unless they've lost a limb it was a tremendous comment.

hey hey Serbian Eagle enjoy ur time here.

As for the Oates comments its not only that most teams have realised that the oilers pp personnel dont really know wot their up to but they do know that Oates can hurt them and that can only help the youngsters, imagine it as a pp coach we have

Here is a few more thought from the game.

Moreau is earning his contract nicely. He is all over the ice. The thing that stood out was, down 3-1 he beat one of the Avs dmen to beat out an icing call.

Semenov is really a frustrating player to watch. That size but doesn't use it. Case in point, he is skating along the boards in the Oiler zone towards the blueline, Avs player is coming at him with the puck, and instead of knocking the guy to another planet, Semy steps aside and makes a half hearted attempt at a stick check. Come on guy.

Conklin wasn't sharp. Should have had the second Avs goal, and the fourth.

Marc Bergeron has the potential to develop into a PP specialist defenceman. Great shot and isn't afraid to use it. Aebisher didn't even see the bullet he fired.

PK is atrocious. No order, just panic. Feels like I am stating the obvious here, but thats been the problem all season long.

Anyway, off to watch the game against the Sharks now.

Welcome to the jungle Serbian Eagle!! This board has the smartest Oiler fans I've ever seen. I am humbled by them. Thank you for your assessment. Oates will help us alot.

Oh and ignore Garfield. You'll find out why soon.
