I think Dipietro is a better example. At least Luongo is healthy and a good goalie. If Crosby gets a career ending concussion, it'd be a Dipietro situation. Although i haven't been following the news lately so i'm not sure if they'd have to pay him 8.7 mill per for 12 years if he got a career ending injury and had to retire.

It will be interesting to see in 5-7 years from now- where all these long contracts are, and how many players are still on that team etc... IMO, teams giving these long term deals are foolish and puts them is a bad spot. Im glad DW only does 4 year deals.

Can anyone explain the Phoenix situation like I'm 5 years old? All this legal mumbo jumbo makes my eyes glaze over ...

My understanding is that the Goldwater group stepped in during the last potential sale because it was so slanted in favor of the buyer (and not the tax payers). Goldwater is basically a taxpayer oversight group. So now that they are involved, even though the Jamison deal is marginally better for the city, the Goldwater group is in CYA mode. They still don't like the deal, think it is bad for the tax payers, and are threatening the city/Jamison (if the deal goes through) with a lawsuit.

It's basically a giant mess and it's very unlikely to get totally untangled for years, especially if they do finalize a sale. Goldwater could take them to court for years, and city officials are in political danger over the situation.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

CAR puts Derek Joslin on unconditional ($125) waivers, presumably for buyout/termination of contract.

Poor Jaws...

Goldwater has gone from tax watchdogs to saboteurs now. They are hostage holders. Their goal is to get the Coyotes out of Glendale. They are opposed to it because they don't want the taxpayer's to pay anything despite the fact polls seem to show that the taxpayer's are willing to pay. Its more of forcing their ideology down the peoples throats.

Canadien won't offre a contract to Brad Staubitz. He'll be UFA on July first.

Anybody want Staubitz back?

We should get Staubitz and Tootoo, that would be hilarious.

Seriously though Staubitz has to be one of the dumbest hockey players I have ever seen.

I'm pretty sure Justin Peters will replace Bobby Boucher for the time being. He's a capable backup.

DarrenDreger: Sources say Gary Bettman has reached a decision on Raffi Torres suspension appeal. Expected to reduce suspension by 4 games. 12 down to 8.

@FTFsTCY

So, Ian White and Kronwall are the "top" pairing for Detroit now. Guessing Howard isn't an all-star this year.
Ouch.

5-7 years is what the team is expecting the player to be good for the majority of them (crosby is the exception). have you not noticed that after 5 or so years the money drops drastically for the remainder of the contract? there is a reason for that, it makes the contract easier to get away from if the player becomes nothing more then a 3rd line checker.

there will always and i mean always be teams who are cheap with real money, but need the cap hit to reach the cap floor. thats where these long term contracts become easy to trade. the team that signs them gets the best years, and then trades them when it becomes a hinderance to them.
