Cap dumps to a cap floor team

I keep hearing that we can just get rid of some of our overpaid players by sending them to cap floor teams for nothing

Are there any teams that would actually do this or is this just a myth that needs to be dispelled?

Montador ($2.75 hit) + Frolik ($2.33 hit) to any of

Anaheim, NYI, STL, CBJ, Florida...etc?

For a 7th rounder or something?

****just looked at teams with most amount of cap space****

What's the floor for this year?

I'd like to hear some other "cap dump" names...namely at centre position (not named Gomez) from other fanbases around the league.

no, because teams that spend near the cap floor generally have budget constraints, so they dont want to spend millions of dollars on players with negligible improvements on the ice.

TO can provide Connoly or Lombardi.

#1 cap dump is definately Tim Thomas

Islanders sort of did it last year with the Rolston-Hunter swap.

Frolik is technically a center I think...atleast that's how he's listed in NHL 12

Shawn Horcoff after the upcoming season. $11m cap hit for the two remaining years, $7m real dollars. Do it! (Please).

Isn't this the logical conclusion to all these 10+ year contracts if everything stays the same? That the guy with a 7.5 cap hit making 1 million dollars will be traded to a team who wants to reach the cap ceiling and can use the locker room character?

Lots of assumptions though:
Assuming NTC/NMC waived.
Assuming This is allowed in current/future CBA.

This is actually the kind of deal that some "cap floor" ie, budget teams might do. If you think Charles Wang, for example, would be willing to eat Horc's 7 million dollar salary so he can end up at 4 million below the cap, you would be spot on.

he's still not worth 7M in real dollars though.

That's irrelevant in this case. The owner could spend $2m below the cap per year simply by trading for Horcoff. That could enticing for some in itself.

7 in real dollars for two years aint that bad imo. Could fill that 3rd line center nicely if any team needs him

But do the oilers really need cap space that much tho?

Edit: he has NTC and NMC too..

The Blues are a budget team not a cap floor team there is a pretty big difference. The Blues will easily be over the cap floor with quality players not cap dumps.

Also the players that cap floor teams look for normally have a big cap him but their actual real dollars paid is much less then the cap hit is.

I think this kind of cap dump mostly come in when a good player is moderately overpaid or a player has a considerably higher cap hit than RL salary. Montador could work as the former, if he is 100% healthy, I guess.

It's not entirely accurate to suggest that this has never happened under the current CBA.

It would be entirely accurate to say that this has happened one or two times at most, however.

It's very rare, and it's not a panacea for every team's bad contract still festering on the books.

Frolik actually isn't so expensive for 2.33 these days... Maybe someone will take him.

Some teams might take another teams cap dump if they have a horrid deal themselves that they want to get rid of. For instance, say X is making 3 mill at 3 years left or something and Y only has 1 year left at 6 mill.

But if you're trying to just give a team trash for "free", you'd have to give them a useful asset on top of it, like a decent draft pick, unless the player is actually good and just overpaid.

Connolly or Lombardi along with Mike Brown to Phoenix for a couple of NHL contracts like Bissonnette and Schlemko. It'd make my day, as a Coyotes fan. Just re-sign Doan, Brule, and Chipchura and call it an off-season.

Garth has gone on record stating he'll be looking to pick up a cap dump once the new CBA gets resolved, provided they can help the Islanders next season and the cost isn't too high.

A second/third line center, or defenseman who can play in the top-4 would be the most likely targets.

Gomez would easily be a better deal than Horcoff for a team looking to reach the floor.
If you take Horcoff you have him for 3 yrs
Horcoff actual money is 6 mil,4 mil 3 mil with a cap hit of 5.5 per season.-13 mil
Gomez is only two yrs.
Gomez actual money is 5.5,4.5 cap hit of 7.3 per season.-10 mil
After the up comming season
Horcoff 7 mil cap hit 5.5 per season two seasons to go.
Gomez 4.5 mil cap hit 7.2 per season 1 season to go.
Loooking to reach athe floor and not wanting to pay too long Gomex > Horcoff.
