That's probably where is comparables start

Emelin's the better defenseman but the arbitration process is not about rewarding the better player it's all about the simple NHL.com numbers; especially since the arbitrator may not even be a hockey person.
Emelin has the potential to be the better defenseman, but last year I don't believe that was the case.

I also don't think the Habs would walk away from a 1-year/$2M deal. They have the cap space and it doesn't seem like they are going to use it. I'd personally love to get him locked up on a 2-3 year deal for around $1.5M-$2M per.

Also comparing Weber to St-Denis is like comparing fried chicken to broccoli. Two completely different kinds of defenseman.

As far as all the "trade him" posts because he filed for arbitration .. lots of players do it. Hell, Montreal filed for arbitration on Price (even though it was for different circumstances). Montreal has filed for arbitration on many players before.

Diaz wants to be a Hab.

http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012/...eping-his-job/

One of my favourite quotes from the article;

"“There were a lot of changes in my life this year — changing leagues, changing countries,” Diaz said. “I didn’t know if I’d be playing in the NHL or AHL, but I trained hard and my goal was to play for the Canadiens."

And another;

"“Everything was like a dream, playing in a Canadiens jersey,” Diaz said."
So true, dime a dozen ? Now that's delusional...

I know you were just trying to make fun of Diaz, but it confuses me players like him don't sign offer sheets more often.

The compensation is so low on low amounts.

Using the 64.3 figure you could offer a guy up to 3.1 and have to give up just a 2nd round pick.

Not saying Diaz is worth a 2nd round pick, or 3.1...but lots of guys are RFA's.

Kinda weird.

Diaz was one of the pleasant surprises from last year, not many people expected him to make the team and he ended up being a solid bottom pairing defenseman. It was his first year in North America and he'll likely continue to improve. Weber had many chances last year and failed, we should be keeping Diaz and trading Weber.

Him and Emelin played their best hockey of the season together and it would've made sense to keep them together to start the year and get another top 4 defenseman but apparently we needed to get another bottom pairing D in Bouillon..

Why would a player be scared of an offer-sheet? If they get an offer-sheet they like, they sign it. If they don't get an offer-sheet they like they ignore it and continue on as normal.

Hell if I was a team in need of a solid 18-20 minute per game, 2nd wave PP guy, I'd definitely sign Diaz to that sheet and give up the 2nd round pick. He has the potential to be even better than that.

I like Diaz, but he seems like he is tryin to push it here.

I don't see the leverage he thinks he got, unless the Habs really low balled.

This one reminds me of Darche again, overvaluing his stock coming off injury where you miss final 20 or more games .

Diaz played his last game Feb 28,i don't see the leverage he thinks he got .

59 games out of 82

I don't want them to walk away but I think they will. Right now the team has (without making a move) 4 bottom-pairing guys in Kaberle, Bouillon, Diaz, and Weber. Even bumping one guy to the press-box they still have one too many and three of those guys will be making $1.5m+

Maybe he sees the same thing many of us and the experts saw in that he was in general playing better hockey than Emelin. Maybe he feels short changed? I'm purely speculating.

Again, like I and others have said in this thread... There is a reason why Emelin gets 2M per 2yr on this team and Diaz doesn't, it's on a team needs basis.

i like Diaz but my issues with him are much the same they are / were with guys like cammalleri ---you can't have only many small, skill guys on your team. The top 4 D men, all have nice puck moving skills from subban, markov - to gorges and even emelin---i don't want a bottom pairing of soft small offensive guys like weber and Diaz...cube plays big but will wear out as a 5'7, 37 y.o dman. as per kaberle, he's big but plays like he's 5'2

thus i'd rather trade him (or weber/kaberle) for size on the wing or in the bottom pairing on D

One year into the NHL and he thinks he's some kind of hot shot?

Doesn't matter, I doubt he makes it to the arbitrator.

I doubt this makes it all the way to arbitration, since he's been in negotiations with the Habs for a while now.

He's just covering his Swiss arse.

If I'm the arbitrator, i ask him if he thinks he can be Suter like this year.

If he says yes, give him 5 -5.5 million right now

Diaz won't make it to arbitration. If he does, he won't get nearly as much as he probably expects.

Wow...I'm sorry I asked.

Is this all just a joke on your part or something?

Should a laugh track be playing after your comments?
