Would the ECHL ever work in Montana or Washington?

As you said, if the CHL is sinking (which it appears to be), there are probably going to be a few more teams of that lot that try to jump ship and join the ECHL like Colorado, Fort Wayne, and Evansville did. From the CHL alone, I think we could probably eventually see teams like Wichita, Missouri, Rapid City, Tulsa, and Allen all joining (i.e. - teams that averaged over 4,000 fans last year), and if that were to happen that'd mean that the ECHL would have 28 teams. And that's assuming that the league doesn't pick up anyone else, too. Considering that the max size of the ECHL would have to be 30 teams (32 if the NHL expanded like is somewhat rumored) for it to really remain a developmental minor league, it doesn't leave 'em much room to pick up brand new markets elsewhere.

ECHL announced last week that they are capping the league at 26 teams - http://www.echl.com/annual-echl-boar...cludes-p178094

Interesting, though let's see if they stick to that if the CHL goes belly up and a few teams from them try to apply to join the ECHL....

Not many of the CHL franchises bring much stability to the table. Maybe Allen and Rapid City.

they capped the number of teams at 24 a couple of years ago so i wouldnt put much stock into that. http://echl.com/annual-echl-board-of...cludes-p163029

If the CHL goes under i would expect to see missouri rapid city allen wichita tulsa and maybe even quad city in the league. It would be foolish to not take these teams as long as they remain viable and keeping drawing well in the future.

Do they fill the rink in Rapid City?

Capacity listed at 5,119.

2008-09: 4,146.0 - 80.99% (10 sellouts in 32 games)
2009-10: 4,811.3 - 93.99% (13 sellouts in 32 games)
2010-11: 4,923.5 - 96.18% (14 sellouts in 33 games)
2011-12: 4,700.2 - 91.82% (5 sellouts in 33 games)

So, "kinda".

Yeah, that'd be above average in the league if they joined and kept up those numbers.

.... and I just made myself depressed by remembering that the Express couldn't even crack 100,000....

Louisville just built an arena worthy of an NHL team, *but* the University of Louisville has first dibs for their basketball team, and there's a renewed talk of trying to get an NBA team there as well, so I don't know if that would happen. Freedom Hall and Broadbent Arena (both of which help former minor-league hockey teams) are both falling apart.

Lexington, KY, is in talks to renovate Rupp Arena (where their former AHL/ECHL teams have played). But both teams folded due to poor attendance, and an arena that sits 24k+ is a little big
