If Bergevin cares so much about character he won't sign Semin or Jagr, then there's no excuse for Gomez being kept on the team. Gomez may be a joker in the locker room but he does not take the job of being a professional hockey player seriously at all. He's a disgrace and he should face the punishment of having to ride a bus in the AHL. Even as a fan of another team, Gomez pisses me off.

Again, that's with no salary taken into consideration. Which will be in 3 years from now. Which we know we won't see that day.
And this will work nicely with him on the fourth line. And although
I don't want this to happen to anyone, if someone breaks a foot blocking a PP shot, it's less likely to be Plenc.

I recommend this be 2nd to last chance.
Just in case next year is issue too - and that would be his last chance.

Sounds better than average. Then Plenc and Gionta when you
want to add the gravey.

I doubt giving Gomez chances is relevant here. For this amount
of money,no-one is going to make decisions to punish Gomez. No
matter how much fans hate him, or the trade he rode in on.

Interesting proposition. May work. If he can get the puck then he's at least good to get into their zone which would kill some seconds. Sounds actually rather promising.

Also IIRC, that "just thoughts" analyst had really good penalty
killing numbers for him.

Gomez to minors?

I know Bergevin said he wouldn't buy him out. It wouldn't make sense anyways since they'd still have cap hits of $3.5, $4.5, $1.66, and $1.66 while only saving a couple of million.

He didn't however say he wouldn't send him to the minors. I just don't see where he would fit on this team as currently constructed. Assuming the lines look something like the following:

Cole - Desharnais - Patches
Bourque - Pleakanec - Gionta
Leblanc - Eller - Armstrong
Moen - White - Prust

I guess there's always the possibility someone gets injured. I guess I could see him on the third line with Eller and Colby, and Louis in Hamilton, but I don't think that makes a ton of sense.

Maybe if the cap floor stays where it is, a team like the Islanders might be interested since they're way below it currently.

Thoughts?

(Also pardon some of the spelling on the names, too lazy to look it up)

Just looking at Phoenix's team right now maybe Gomez can be of interest to them, they're very weak at centre and well below the cap floor. Also his salary the next two years is lower than his cap hit so that'd be more beneficial for them. They were paying Langkow $4.5 million last year for 30 points so maybe Gomez can be their new Langkow.

I think he'll get moved down only if they sign or trade for a player that puts them over the cap. If not, they'll probably keep him up.

There's no point in sending Gomez down until we need the cap room. If Bergy is pretty much done with the shopping, then Gomez will stay with us.
He will get a chance come training camp, but I suspect the leash will be very short.
He still might not get sent down, but he'll likely get scratched if he doesn't perform well.

Gomez must be waived first, right?
Do you think there will be takers?

There is nothing new or revolutionary in this 'solution'. This is exactly what the Rangers did with Redden. It is however a roster tactic that only the cash rich teams can afford to employ. I suspect that in the new CBA the smaller market teams will be looking to address this inbalance.

OMG, a rational post when it comes to Gomez. This, this and this and this again.

My take on the Gomez situation is exactly this. If you have a shot of grabbing a long term fit for your team that requires the cap space, a potential corner stone. A Bobby Ryan or something, if Bergevin wants to go this way, then you dump Gomez, but you don't do it for temporary bandaid solutions and you don't do it, just because other posters don't like that he makes too much.

Ridiculous. I hate seeing Gomez in the lineup.. But I would never question his work ethic. I do question his talent and hockey smarts, but not his effort.

I don't think you can go scoreless a whole year without some work ethic problem. That's his job.

I disagree. Gomez and his salary / contract are a circus. Once he's sent down, then the message is clear.... he's done with the Habs.

We have a new front office, new coaches and a focus on hard work and talented young players. Gomez distracts from all those positive things and is overall a big negative. Let him sit in Hamilton and sulk. And let the young guys in Hamilton use him as motiviation that no player gets a free pass for the Habs.
