Its a gamble for both teams, can turn out really well, but what do they have to lose? If rick can stay healthy leafs get a starter and isles get a top 4 dman who can fill the void til Reilly is ready. Both players have horrible contracts and need a Change of scenery and start fresh.

I think most NYI fans are waiting for him to retire or be bought out.

DiPietro's buyout will be $1.5m per,if he's bought out.
If he retires,insurance pays the bulk of his contract.
I pointed that out in this thread.That's what I meant when I posted buying out DiPietro would be more embarassing then anything else because it would be over 16-18 yrs.
Isles want the 4.5M cap hit, they wouldn't be so desperate to trade him away.
But no one wants to waste 4.5M a year for 9 more years, and that is very far from being desperate. I understand trying to get to the cap floor, but you'd be ridiculous not completely get rid of the contract at the cost of one 1st rounder.
If you really have trouble spending 4.5M a year tell Snow to ask Sather how to.
Honestly, I don't feel it's a priority to trade Komisarek, as most leafs fans do.
We are not super close to the cap, and we just got some cap relief by buying out Armstrong anyway. After trading Schenn there is no longer a surpluss of experienced D on the team, especially of the shut-down/defensive-specialist kind.
And I am actually interested in seeing what new coach Carlyle can do for Komi. Remember, this is the same coach that got Beauchemin back into form after leaving Toronto. I have high hopes that Carlyle can get Komi back into a player we could use.

I'm sure if the Leafs wanted to they could convince a team to take Komisarek for a 5th or 6th round pick. If not this year then definitely next year when his salary is way lower than his cap hit. I also think he has a chance to turn it around this year under the new coach.

This is a lose/lose situation for the Leafs. DiPietro isn't better than Riemer and Komisarek's contract is desirable to cap floor teams.

He also praised their solid goaltending situation, having a vet like Nabokov to mentor up and coming Kevin Poulin and Anders Nilsson. It was no accident that he did not include DP.
Still, there will be no DP buyout. While the team has gotten no value since the contract was signed, management still likes him. Their true hope is that he gets back to full health and earns his salary at some point. The whole point of the 15 year contract was to spread out the salary and cap hit to make him a relative bargain over time. After 5 years, he is now the 11th highest paid goalie. If it had gone according to plan, halfway through the contract he would be a great goalie in his prime, with a cap hit below the average starting goalie. Obviously injuries wrecked that plan. However, the team hopes it's not too late. He's still only 30. They would like him to get back in net, whether it's 2013 or even 2014. If he can, then they would have a relative bargain in goal.
Even when Dp has been healthy the last few years he has been terrible. His contract has about another 10 years on it and you have Komi going to the Iles to fill the void until a leafs prospect is ready.

I think his personel friend Wang still likes him.
I don't agree that there won't be a buyout though.Wang was also a personel friend of Yashin and eventually bit the bullet on a Yashin buyout.
47 games played over a 4 yr total,shows DiPietro can't stay healthy.It's too bad because he's such a competive kid.Still,he's young and outgoing enough, to move from player to another role in hockey like announcing.
