Worth a shot. If his advanced numbers weren't a fluke, this two-year deal could look like a steal.

I don't really see the problem with this signing. He averaged 14 mins a game with the Bolts and 18 with the Isles. Sounds good to me for a guy who costs millions less than the guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

Oh for ****s sake.

This is the last thing we need with Luke Schenn on the team. Also, keep the little Wellwood away from him... we don't want him to end up like his brother.

Gervais is a decent player. He can skate, he's strong. He never played for a halfway decent team until last year, and played well for the Bolts once he cracked the lineup. I always respected that he never gave up despite being an Isle. He can play the PP a little too, which is a bonus.

Even if they fear that Bourdon is too scrambled from his concussions to start off the season with the big team, I don't like this one. He was too bad for the Islanders, and was quite often a healthy scratch for the Bolts. We give him a 300k raise and signs him for two years. Sure, depth is always good, but if we really felt the need for another dman I think we could have done better. Anyway, if Bourdon, Gustafsson or Manning can't beat out Gervais (or Lilja since they could dump him to the AHL if they have enough cap space, despite his 35+ contract), then they are simply not good enough for the NHL.

The problem with the Gervais signing isn't that he's bad, nor is it the contract. The Flyers now have 9 d-men vying for 7 spots, with only 1 waiver exempt guy. They also seem completely averse to the idea of ever giving a young d-man a true chance.

That's how I see it. One of them have to be on the way out. But to where would be the question.

Meltzer points out the numbers game back on D in todays blog posting..it's a legit concern.

I did have to laugh at this description of Lilja in the same post....limitations is an understatement. I don't know about anybody else but all those limitations suggest he shouldn't even be in the NHL...

Finally..looks like the 2yr contract he got is presenting a problem afterall if they can't trade the dude. When we signed him plenty of people could not fathom why it was for 2 yrs.....

While some fans acted like Lilja had no business in the NHL, I thought he was adequate as a part-time third-paring defenseman who averaged 13:41 of ice time per game. He has his share of limitations -- poor mobility, no offensive game, difficulty triggering outlet passes and zone clears under pressure -- but he did bring some positives to the table....

Well Gus can just be sent down. Even still, that means 8 guys are left. Do they keep 8?

With the concerns over Timonen's health/age, maybe they do.

As long as they aren't in a cap crunch this season (which at this point seems to be the case) there's no issue with the two year deal. If they send him down and his cap hit remains because of the 35+, that dead space won't really hurt the team. Of course, if they do get into a cap-crunch situation then it will be a problem. As Meltzer pointed out though, he was a fine #7 defenseman. He did exactly what a #7 defenceman does, fills in when needed and plays like a #7 defenseman.

I think people are underestimating the ability of guys like Mez, Coburn and Schenn. While none are Dan Boyle they all are good two way dmen.

Mez can make nice outlet passes and skate skate the puck up himself.
Coburn's wheels are sick. I wish he would commit more to joining the rush or carrying it himself.
Schenn had a bad season but showed an ability to make nice outlet passes. Hopefully, he trims down and gains his mobility back.

His giveaways versus takeaways ratio may be encouraging as indicated by several beat writers but he just doesn't seem to be a good defender overall...

Gervais has failed to put up a positive +/- in 7 NHL seasons so far.
In contrast, Erik Gustafsson has been a +12 last year in 30 games.
