David Perron 4YRS @3.8M = Tyler Ennis ??

Perron just signed a 4yr deal after injuries caused him to miss roughly as much time as Ennis. If Ennis signs a 2 yr deal do you think this helps up get his cap hit under 3mil?

Perron 11-12
51gp 21g 21a

Ennis 11-12
48gp 15g 19a

Why the hell did they rush him to the show in 07?

Regardless Perron's done as much as Ennis for longer, so the hit will of course be lower.

Logan Couture is a closer comparable given age, production, etc. I'm sure the Sabres will be pointing to that deal quite a bit.

While Regier did admit that he didn't see Ennis getting a long-term deal, I do think Regier will try to get him signed for 3 years - if for no other reason than the Sabres will have their hands full in summer of 2014 when Vanek, Pominville and Miller all become UFAs. I don't think he wants Ennis to also have an expiring contract that summer.

Does Perron's deal buy UFA years? That has to be factored in as well.

Perron has more of a body of work (ie years)

Yes, years 3 and 4 of Perron's deal are UFA years, which usually drive up the overall cost of a deal.

3 years for Ennis and he's still RFA right? If so, three years 9M would be my guess.

Thats my thinking.

How long before he is a UFA?

Thanks a lot, Howson. Nick Foligno just got 3X3. Ennis is probably going to get more now right?

EDIT: They probably bought at least one UFA year though, right? SO maybe that's still a targeted number for Tyler.

Pretty incomparable players. Foligno is also I believe soon to turn 25 so that contract would go into UFA territory.

3x3 seems like what Ennis should get, but we'll see.

At this stage in career's Foligno is much more accomplished.

Yes, three years would be still RFA coming out of the end of the deal.

Yeah, they're buying a year of UFA off of Nick. That tends to jack up the price.

I don't agree with this statement in the argument of salary. In his 4th full season and best scoring season of his career he still has not met the standard Ennis set as a rookie. I understand they have different games and that Nick adds a physical element Ennis doesn't offer, but in reality offensive players get paid at a higher rate.

Ennis has already established himself as the superior offensive talent, IMO and would qualify for a higher pay. I think the bigger issue for them to be similar in pay is that CLB bought UFA years and Ibelieve at the same length the Sabres would still keep him at RFA status.

For comparables I would be looking at the second contract a players signs rather than the third. Two year deals are common for second contracts.

David Perron $4.3M/2yrs
Nick Foligno $2.4M/2yrs
Brad Marchand $5M/2yrs
Drew Stafford $3.8M/2yrs

I think Ennis will get $5M/2yrs. If it turns out that after the 2nd year he's underpaid he has the arbitration hammer. If he's overpaid, he can remain overpaid by signing his qualifying offer.
