It's an exception that proves the rule. Teams with high-end skill crash & burn in the early rounds all time, but teams without that high-end skill don't win the Cup. In recent history, Pens, Red Wings, Boston, have all gotten humiliated in the early rounds, but guess what they have that a plucky team like Montreal can't even sniff..

Ultimately I'd take a somewhat inconsistent team that in 5 years crashes early three times, gets to ECF once, and wins a Cup, than a team that scores some great upsets, maybe gets to ECF or SCF twice, but gets stomped there.

Purrettu for Richard!

It is day 6 of the Semin wars. Carnage on both sides has been eye scorchingly brutal. Everyone left standing is worn out beyond humanity. Neither side knows what they are fighting for anymore. They want just to see their women, to hold their babies one last time. They pray for death but death does not come. Only one man can put an end to the madness.

Centuries later, children will utter his name in reverence: Purrettu, Purrettu, Purrettu!!

There's a scene in Douglas Adams' books where Marvin the Paranoid Android gets his foot stuck in the mud in a swamp, and he spends millennia pivoting on one leg, "just to make the point."

Every time I open these threads (now the fourth) and find the board is still talking about a player from whom the GM has moved on, that's what pops into my head. Carry on. I've nothing to add I haven't already written more than once. Everyone should just macro a set of bullet points and post every 4.5 hours.

Dynamic scorer; whimsical commitment; burns his team; time to move on; dude's going to make bank somewhere; sign someone else to replace some of those points.

The SDF rejects any appeals at ceasefire until Semin has been signed by the Washington Capitals.

I'd take that scenario too (in 5 years, crashes early three times, gets to ECF once, and wins a Cup), but we don't have that team even, so you do what McPhee is doing and you make a dramatic shift to the makeup of the team's core. I'm no GMGM fan, but even I get what he's doing.

Semin has worn out my patience over the years, but I would sign him to another 1 year deal considering what is left on the market, but not for $6.7 million. If he doesn't click with Ribs, then the Caps can trade him later in the season for something. I hope he goes to a Western team or even better, the KHL. That would be one less scoring threat to face. One thing is for sure, the next year will be another multiple threads about whether we should have kept him or not. I find it funny how all the other NHL fans are drooling about having him as their UFA after bashing on him for so long. I've seen a lot of hockey in my life and Semin isn't the worst player in NHL history as some make him out to be. My biggest complaint about him is him never fully embracing his skills and silencing his critics. He had a chance to do that this past year after McGuire talked crap about him during the Game 4 Caps/TB series.

Go Caps!

The SDF is fighting the good fight even after the bell has sounded in the 12th round. Can't blame em for trying I guess, but I wish at least they would make an honest assessment instead of all the deflecting and head in sand stuff....

LA and Boston didn't have "that" team either.

This is "only" year 4.

What you have to understand, Drake, is that Semin is simply the catalyst for the philosophical battle between the forces of heart and the dark arts of toe-drag. Only a child born of a synthesis between the two irreconcilable domains can restore peace in the universe.

And just when the darkness was about to consume us all, Mathieu Perreault spread his wings...

Semin is the type of player that make you interested in the sport, it is just sad to see that grinding all game long is deemed more effective nowadays.

Not hearty enough to be Canadian, not skilled enough for a toe drag.
