2 Years makes him an RFA at 25. Who he is in the NHL will must likely be established at that point and they can lock him up long term then if they want. And he'll be 2 years from UFA age, which means that in a longer term deal his first 2 RFA years will bring down the cap hit and also means Eller will have relatively less leverage being 2 years from UFA status.
If he's solid at 25 they are positioned to offer a Price style contract (obviously lower salary amount) in term if he's a top six center.
Correct me if Im wrong please, but I think this would mean hed have 2 more RFA years after this contract is up, which is great if we want to sign him long term.

People seriously underestimate contracts right now and forget where we are with numbers, If you fill a team with average players on a 23 man roster you should spend about 3.13m per player. Lars Eller fits that perfectly, people always complain about the cap space but jesus its hard to even get to the cap anymore

I don't see how 2.5m would be a good signing considering that Tootoo just got 1.9, Fedotenko 1.5 and Pouliot 1.8
Eller have more upside than Tootoo and Fedotenko but he still needs to prove a lot of things.
