Semin would make us better. And frankly I would rather have him for 3-4 years than Parise for 10-12 years. Plus, Parise haven't been that good in the playoffs. And simply extra flexibility in the future won't hurt. Imagine if Z, Mule, Suter and Parise are all signed until they are 40. There are only two players I would be really okay giving out such a deal - Weber and Malkin.

This is the key part for me. I would take Parise for 12 years, but the more I think about it I'd probably settle for Semin for shorter. Fits better into our cap structure.

We're paying Cleary how much?! I'm not feeling so well all of a sudden.

Also I think you have a typo there, Ericsson makes $1.25m right?

Hudler played the PP QB all last season on the 2nd unit - although he would have created another 15-20 goals if it been him up front instead of Bert/Cleary, with any of the defensemen or especially a Lids/Kron/White rotation through the four spots.

Sammy is maybe as gritty. Bigger yes. But Huds is plenty gritty.

Also, with Parise gone, Semin, Selanne and Doan are the the only 50+ point forwards left. Wellwood also scored at that pace. Nobody else left did it. I posted previously that we needed at least one if not two guys out of the 50+ group. Selanne, and Doan are pretty unlikely. Wellwood would make a solid third line center (especially with his killer faceoff skills), but I don't see that signing happening because of Babcock's obsession with putting Helm into that spot NOW. Semin... maybe. But that leaves us with Dats, Z, Semin, Flip, Franzen, and Sammy or Bert as our top six. Cleary if we're lucky and he returns to his form from a couple years ago.

Hudler only signed in Calgary because Holland signed Sammy. Holland could have kept him, especially after losing Parise.

Right now it looks pretty grim. Who do we sign on defense... Scott Hannan? Michal Rosival? Carlo Coliacovo?

Holland made a mistake by signing Sammy instead of Hudler, and assuming that he would get Parise and Suter. He should have cut loose of them on the morning of the third or even the fourth if possible when it became apparent that the top guys were going away; at that point he should have gone after Hudler (having not signed Sammy), Semin, and Carle. Having those three are better than having just Parise and Suter for the same money.

At this point we're looking at Semin, possibly a Rick Nash trade (Franzen/Jurco/1st?), plus sending Smith and maybe also Quincey out of town (plus prospects/picks) in some kind of deal to get a defenseman. Who knows, maybe we can get Weber. A Hannan signing might end up happening if Smith and Quincey are traded; Kronwall, ???, White, Ericsson, Hannan, Kindl, and ??? would be the defense. Weber certainly would look nice in that spot, as would Pietrangelo. Or maybe one of NYR's trio. Perhaps a three-way that ends up with Smith, Quincey, picks and prospects in New York, Pitkanen, Del Zotto, and Ruutu/Stewart in Detroit, and M.Staal plus maybe Eaves in Carolina?

Making these moves:

Bertuzzi/Datsyuk/Semin
Nash/Zetterberg/Stewart
Cleary/Filppula/Samuelsson
Abdelkader/Helm/Tootoo
Two of Mursak/Emmerton/Miller

Kronwall/Ericsson
Del Zotto/Pitkanen
Hannan/Kindl/White

EDIT: If New York doesn't care for Quincey, replace Hannan with Quincey.

I have a cap question with all of this space. Is their anyway for the Wings to have Filppula's and Howard's signing bonuses count towards this years cap? I thought they talked about allowing this with the Islanders struggling to meet the cap floor a couple years ago. If you give them 10 million each and they then sign much smaller deals is that legal? I mean if I am Wings right now I refuse to be cap compliant if they strike out on Doan and Semin just not interested in everything out there. It would be funny to watch the one team that voted against the cap for it limiting spending be the first to say well we didn't hit the floor, sorry we would rather do that than overpay marginal talent.

In a word, no.

It's not about money. I would prefer give the spot to our kids. We aren't AK away from winning the cup.

No he is an average player that doesn't help enough to justify getting him at this point.

Any additions up front need to either be 1st line wingers or 4th line soldiers. THe only real need right now is a defense men, preferably a defense first guy that plays defense second and then thinks about getting in on the offense.

Random dream roster I dreamed up. In this unrealistic scenario, we get Semin for dirt cheap. We also never extended Todd Bertuzzi. Sign Rozsival. Jarnkrok beefs up and plays third line center with Miller and Eaves (who is healthy). I also really want to see the path of destruction that fourth line leaves in its wake. That line is literally Grind Line 2.0.

Is Mattias Ohlund done? He has 4 years left at $3.6 million. I wonder what Stevie would want in return for him assuming he has any hockey left he would be an interesting pickup for the third pair. Seeing has the Lighting have been collecting defense and currently have 8 on the roster maybe Ohlund wouldn't cost too much.

Anybody know what his health status is?

Edit: Looks like I should've just googled it in the first place... He had partial joint replacement in February. His career is in doubt and he knows it but is going through physical therapy and there is a chance he could get back on the ice. How physical or effective he can be is obviously completely up in the air. If his recovery was looking positive and the Lightning were willing to part ways I would give something up for him. He could be good for 14-15 minutes of defense per night.

haha I know that now. I will keep an eye on his status though because if he can recover (odds not in his favor) he could be a good guy to shut down the bottom pair. He could play a safe and conservative game. Who knows how well he will recover though.

Ohlund may have to retire, nobody really knows. Operations to both knees multiple times and probably out until at least Christmas for now.

I don't know where to ask this, and I don't want to start a whole thread on this question, so I guess I'll ask here.

I'm doing my research on a bunch of players for a fantasy keeper league draft, and I'm wondering what happened to Zetterberg. Was it just a slightly down year?

Had a slow start, but had about his usual production the rest of the year. His production now-a-days is probably going to be around 75-80 points, and with his line from last year getting broken up, and Detroit's current top 6, he's going to have to work hard for that next year.

The league did not change the rules regarding signing bonuses, to help out the NYI.

The cba allowed teams to count Entry Level Contract bonuses and over age 35 bonuses, against he cap.

Not really a prospect, but Grand Rapids signed Brennan Evans, formerly of Peoria in the AHL, to a one-year deal.

His only NHL action, according to the Free Press, is two games in the WCSF against Detroit in 2004.

Judging by his stats, Grand Rapids needed a goon
6'4'', 225 lbs and 100 points/1349PIM in 636 AHL games.

IMHO, I actually think selling now and plugging in the holes is the best route. LTIR Bert (Capgeek doesn't have a LTIR, so I have to buy him out every time to simulate the cap space), buy out Samuelsson. Trade Q, CC, heck see what you could get Fil... Then Pittsburgh gets bounced out in the first round () like they always do, Iginla can't reup because their salary cap situation is tight... Swoop in and nab Iggy, grab Horton, grab Zidlicky for NJ... Happy day for everyone!

Zidlicky is paired with Salvador, who's corsi stats aren't any better than Kronwall. But it doesn't have to be that pairing anyways.
