Armstrong has scored 15 or more 3 times in his career.

I'm hoping Eller gets some PP time.

I'm also not ruling out Galchenyuk lining up on his wing for the season.

Or maybe Gomez has a bit of a revival on his wing.

Seems to me that's what they are going for, and it fits. It's his best chance to be a top 6 player.

Big, physicaL center who can compete with top line opposition or dominate bottom liners, still RFA when this contract is up.

What's not to like?

If he gets a reasonable amount of PP, I don't see why not.

Hell, he had 16 goals last year in a crappy situation, so odds are he'll only get better production wise.

Think about guys slightly older than Eller who were projected to turn into top forwards, and how many are already semi-permanent major contributors to their team's top 6. How long have Crosby, Kopitar, Neal, Stastny, Malkin, Zajac, Wolski, Krejci, Staal, Toews, Backstrom, Kessel, and Giroux (all "high" draft picks and currently in their respective top 6s) already spent at/near the top of their depth charts? Heck, I think the oldest of those guys might be 24 or 25, but I think you'd agree that they could probably already be considered within a couple years of their "absolute prime".

So yeah, to still be proving yourself at 22, without having spent time in the NCAA as an "excuse", could be considered "late blooming" - assuming he eventually proves himself to be a "legit" top 6 guy, factoring more heavily into the outcomes of his team's games, in the first place. As such, I certainly consider DD to be a late bloomer, for example (assuming he continues to earn his top 6 role).
Would you consider the Sedin's or Kesler a late bloomer?

European players tend to take a year or two longer to blossom. I'm not worried about it.

It would be a best case scenario to see armstrong get to that level again. I want something that's more of a sure thing, though. Gomez could see time on his wing, but I dont think that's a great fit with lars either.

I'm also not banking on Galchenyuk making the team. If he earns it, fine, but we cant go into the season expecting that to happen.

If Eller can put up 35ish+ points and play that much during games on a regular basis he really isn't a 3rd line center at all
That's what a great third line centre does!

You don't think that matching up with the other team's first line will get you a ton of ice time on it's own? Throw in PK time and maybe second unit PP and it's one of the most valuable positions on the team. If you have someone who can do it well, then that will be the result.

I expect 2 years/3 million, and if it's more I don't care, I just hope he gets an opportunity to prove himself offensively.

When Plek gets older and his production starts to decline, he'll probably make a great shutdown center for many years...

This is how I hope it turns out :

1st -> Galchenyuk (elite centerman)

2nd -> Eller (two-way threat)

3rd -> Plekanec (shutdown guy)

4th -> Leblanc (defensive specialist)*

*could be turned into a winger but would fit that role perfectly if he doesn't pan out offensively.

Pacioretty's current contract is a good comparable. 2 years 3-0-3.2 mil.

Desharnais on the wing on the first line with MaxPac?

So far Plekanec has shown mre offensive upside than Eller.

That's what they're going for now, because that's his best chance now. That's all I'm trying to say. I don't think it would take too much of a roster change (or injury situation) for LL to be tried back at C. And if this happened a couple of years from now, I could see him doing well enough in the role that they might hesitate to move him back. Depending on Eller's progress (in particular) this year, I could see these guys finding themselves competing against each other for the same spot on the centre position depth chart, too.

But if people wanna toss around "book it" statements, that's fine I guess.

Leblanc will be more than a 4th liner, if he is moved to center it will be only if the Habs trade away Plek. I'm pretty sure they are going to keep him at wing.

Off course not. If he evolves and proves he is clearly the best replacement for Plek or Desharnais within the next 2 years...

But a short term contract leaves us all the flexibility needed to trade him if somehow we feel its for the best.

Eller will get a fresh start under a new coach and gm, one in which hopefully he is given the chance to play and not be benched for every mistake he makes. It was a case of JM playing veterans and trying to make the playoffs and not allowing him to play. He definitely had good chemistry with Ak and Travis but never got the chance to keep it going. He has good vision and I like the way he carries the puck, he can definitely be a good assist player and proably will eventually play with Pacioretty. He was a first rounder so he has the talent, he just needs to put it together and get an edge to his game and get stronger. I wish him the best.

Likely to be one of Therrien's favorite players, I wouldn't be surprised at the least to see Lars bumping off Bourque from the top lines, that is if the latter doesn't lose his spot during preseason.

Larry skates hard, lays the shoulder and has sweet hands. He backchecks and can take on pretty big minutes when the need is there. He was able to pull a respectable season offensively getting pretty tough assignments and reduced icetime (talking outta my *** here haven't checked QoC stats) so in my mind no way he doesn't get 20 if he gets easier matchups and more offensive starts. He should get a shot pretty quick at top 6 duties, since as of now Bourque is his only competition (although Bourque apparently is training like crazy)...

I say anything under 5M will turn out a bargain, it could be a real steal since most guys who will be making ~3M to score 20 goals the next few years probably have no defensive upside at all, or they would be making a boatload more money.
