Don't forget that Habs have a ton of overpaid players as well:
Gomez, Gionta, Bourque, Markov, Kaberle. You win some, you lose some I guess.
Gomez IMO is the only real bad one. The others when healthy are worth more or less what they got. Boutique it's the amount of years, the cap hit ain't that bad
If they trade Cole at this moment, I think I'll become a Leafs fan...
I don't remember the last guy in Montreal with so much heart and playing through pain like he did. Plus, he really enjoy being here and he's a model for our young players. I don't think MaxPac would have done what he did without Cole besides him.
I don't mind if we trade Gionta or Plekanec, but trading Cole would be really stupid.
So after a down year, Gionta and Plekanec become afterthoughts while Cole is what makes you a fan?
Cole was a great leader last year, but talk about the what have you done for me lately effect.

Bourque's contract really isn't horrible when you consider his track record until last year. It's too long but numbers wise it's a secondary contract for a secondary scorer.
Besides Gomez, the no contract right now is completely awful. Kaberle has a bad one but for a defender who puts up that many points it's not insane, it's no worse than the Cammalleri contract we were able to get partial relief from. Gionta is slighly overpaid, as is Cole, especially when you factor in length, but we are talking major assets that many teams would overpay.
Markov's contract could be bad but considering the length it was a calculated risk and if Markov is 3/4ths the player he was before the injuries it was worth it.
Probably because now they have no sense of salary obligation to give Eller any icetime. Such a cheap contract might mean another season of no PP time and fringe linemates.
You shouldn't tell those people that Desharnais will make less than him next year then.

Markov healthy worth the $5.75m/year he got... Before injury he was a top 10 defenceman in the NHL. When I see Carle getting 5.5 and Wideman 5.25 and guys like Paul Marting having a cap hit of $5M and Bouwmeester $6.68 .. I can only think that Markov, when Healthy, is a steal at $5.75M.

Not sure what that has to do with my point.
When giving a player a big money contract, IMO it's reasonable to expect management to play said player in a matter that'll make giving so much money more worth while. For example, I fully expect Prust to hit career highs in icetime/game next season so he has full opportunity to make his contract seem worth it. Emelin got 2M so now I think (barring terrible play) it's less likely he'll be benched to make room for next season's 'Campoli' compared to last season when he was only making ~900k.
nice contract and cap hit, he's signed for cheap for 2 years and we still have a couple RFA years after. Thought he would get closer to 1.5M so happy to see it's a little less. looking forward to seeing what he can do next season.

I agree and disagree I guess. Cole for instance wasn't given PP time in excess to pad his stats by Martin, however you could also argue one Martin's downfalls was not using Cole properly - perhaps the GM didn't take kindly to his prize UFA pickup; not being able to show the "value" of his contract.
Awesome contract, kind of validates what I've been saying about his role with the club. People should compare what Pleks got on his 2nd contract to what Eller got on his 2nd contract. Then you factor in inflation.
Eller is great but he is no Pleks. Pleks is a special player. When he had his I'm a girl 38 point season 3-4 years ago, he was probably the hardest working Hab that year. Eller is great and we need him, just because I value Pleks more than Eller, doesn't mean I don't like Eller.
But Eller is 2nd best at everything and he will in all likelihood continue to be 2nd best. He probably will never be better defensively than Pleks is and he'll probably never be more offensively gifted than Galenchyuk and probably not even DD.
But Eller is talented, I'm not saying he is a bust, all I am saying is, there will probably always be a better Hab than him at a role. But that's mostly because we've been lacking in the Centre position for 15 years and as a result have been cultivating centre's for the past 5+ years and he's a victim of circumstance mostly.

I say this as someone whose favourite player is Plekanec who would be more than happy to see Plek stay with the Habs long term; Eller might not have Plekanec's goal scoring ability but is naturally better at enough of the game to suggest Eller could end up a similar player (better or worse would be a guess).
Plek had minimal expectations coming into the league and if anything that helped him, he was able to work out what he needed to make it in the AHL and by slowly bringing him up he was able to figure out just what he needed to make it.
Eller isn't Plekanec defensively right now but Plek is one of the best defensive forwards in the game, I can't say anyone would be as good as him when it comes to positioning and intercepting the puck because that is an elite ability that is at least 50% mental.
But Eller is already a good to very good defensive player (According to Boucher, Eller had the most D-zone puck recoveries per-minute of any Habs forward, not to mention has among the best numbers on 5 on 5 play), and is already a better puck carrier and more physical than Plekanec.
It's very difficult to claim someone is the next Plekanec because Plek exceeded all expectations and is such a complete and intelligent player that you can't assume his career can be replicated, but like Plekanec, Eller is more than the sum of his surface stats.
very good contract for the team... surprised the Eller camp didn't fight for more, though if that's an indication that Eller's priority was to have a deal done and prove his worth, all the better.

I've never seen a post full of such "self back patting" based on absolutely nothing, as that.

Exactly. This was an awesome post. Just because Eller isn't as good as Pleks, doesn't mean Eller is a bust.
Its unrealistic to expect Elller to be "both" better defensively than Pleks and better offensively. Pleks is in the Selke hunt the past 3 years. He's a top 4 defensive player in the game.
For people to expect Eller to be at that level, top 4 in the game, is projecting WAY WAY WAY too much on Eller.
I've never seen a post full of such "self back patting" based on absolutely nothing, as that.
That's hilarious.
I don't think Eller will ever be defensively better than Pleks.
Nor do I think he'll be offensively better.
Go back and read what I said. I didn't back peddle. I never cut down Eller once. I merely said, other people will probably beat him for offensive and defensive positions.
I also think Leblanc has the potential to be better defensively than Eller. He's shown more defensive smarts at a younger age than Eller has. His vision of the game and how it unfolds is what I think will make him a better defensive specialist than Eller will be.

I stand by 100% what I said in my earlier posts.
I never said you back peddled.
Are you that far gone in this discussion that you're denying accusations people didn't make? Good stuff
It was a hilarious self back patting full post, and it was all unwarranted. I loved every second of it.
