Even if there was absolutely no history with Teemu, he would still be a perfect fit. I for one am not writing him off.

I hope he does. We have a spot on the bottom pairing which is up for grabs and I'd sure like to see him on the team. If he gets it he would likely be paired with Stuart so we would have a lefty - lefty bottom pairing but that wouldn't be the end of the world.

If have no problem offering Semin a cap hit for than Parise's as long as it isn't more than two years on The deal. Does anyone else agree with me on this? I know we'd still be under the salary cap by quite a bit even with a $15M/2yrs of Semin. Oh ya, and we'd probably win a few more games too...

Winnik is an excellent 3rd-4th line option. Problem is...he's terrible to negotiate with. That's why he has bounced around to so many teams. Sharks fans are pretty upset Doug Wilson is moving on without him. Winnik played awesome down the stretch and was one of the few players who showed up in the playoffs. But if he's demanding $2.5-3M, might be a little too rich for a player who is mostly a penalty kill specialist.

Unless he is worth/willing to sign long term I don't think a big money player should fit into our plans

I personally think it is extremely unlikely. But it would be amazing if TNSE could lure him here for a year.

It would be beyond amazing.

But as Jet and I briefly chatted about....its a nice dream.

I asked about Craig Smith on the Nashville boards to get a feeling for an opinion on him.

I know everyone talks about Wilson, but I think Smith suffers from the numbers game in Nashville and we could potentially send some defensive pieces (Hainsey) plus some other stuff for him.

I think he'd be an outstanding fit for our top 6. Which is exactly why the price may not be cheap either.

What do you guys think about that?

That might be interesting I have not watched enough of Smith to have a real feel what have you seen in his game that you like Sweech?

I have to say that my ideal line up would be

Kane Jokinen Wheeler
Ladd Wilson little
Poni Burmi Antro
Cormier Slates (Thor Macho)

I would love to move Little back to right wing and bring in Wilson who I think would be great as the puck possession guy with Ladd and Little. Then our top 2 centers are 210, and 215 pounds.

My only issue is I wouldn't want to pay the price Colin Wilson will cost especially now that we have Olli in the fold.

How about this instead?

Kane T. Zajac Wheeler
Ladd Jokinen Little
Poni Scheifele Antro
Cormier Slates Macho/Thor

Zajac is from here, is UFA in 13/14, his wife is also from here, and they also just happened to have a baby last season, IIRC. Am guessing that the grandmothers and grandfathers involved would love to have their grandchild raised on the home-front and ASAP. Given Zajac's UFA date, I wonder if LouLam might be open to a trade of some sort rather than lose another player for nothing.

Just sayin', and speculatin' big time... from way out in left field.

I'm about a week late, but did anyone else watch the press conference on July 1st when Chevy talks about signing Ponikarovsky? It has since been uploaded onto the official site.

Chevy said that right now Poni is penciled in on the left side, but that could change in the future because he still has some "irons in the fire".

He could have been talking about Jokinen (and therefore shifting Little over to RW), but I really think he's still trying to acquire a free agent RW.

So you resigned Poni and Antro but threw away Burmi? Or was Burmi part of a package for Zajac?

Jokinen said he was excited to play with Miettinen...so I wonder if there's potential for Mitts to play on a top 2 line.

Zajac has (privately) said he doesn't want to play in Winnipeg. We'd lose him in his UFA year. Of course those other factors may influence him but I don't think it'll be a Parise type situation with Zajac, he'll stay in NJ I think.

That is cool; I disagree and have heard something entirely different and very recently from someone I very much respect and I'll just leave it at that.

This is what he's said publicly in the past BTW...

Quote:
New Jersey Devils forward Travis Zajac is another NHLer who gets asked by fellow pros from time to time about his hometown.

“Guys have asked what it’s like, and I’m like, well, you need a jacket and tuque. Other than that, it’s good,” Zajac said. “It would be a great city to play in. The fans would support you. For me, it’s a great place to live. People are great, people are nice. I might be a little biased, but I’d love to see a team come back to Winnipeg.”
And hey, if the bulk of players decide to pass on playing for a Winnipeg franchise, Zajac has an idea.

“There’s enough Winnipeg guys in the league now,” he said with a laugh. “Maybe we could all get on a Winnipeg team and we’d be fine.”
Quote:

“They’re also looking for … a community where their kids can grow up in and be safe. I think Winnipeg gives players that.”
— Zajac

PS: Again, just 100% speculation.

What we do know:

*He is from Winnipeg and so is his bride and they just had a child and their families reside here as well.

*He will be a UFA in less than one year - and plays for a team that just lost its star player to UFA for nothing.

*That team is also in extreme financial trouble at the moment and the league could soon assume full control there - akin to the Coyotes.

*That team cannot afford to lose another player in a similar manner to Parise and must either sign or trade a pending UFA like Zajac and should probably do it fairly quickly at that. It becomes quite difficult to do so however when the league may be soon taking over the budgeting process there.

I've seen that, I also trust my source so maybe he's just telling different people things to screw with us, haha. If it was very recently, he may have changed his mind since I last heard my info, which was a few days before he returned to NJ after his injury.

From what I've heard from the Zajac family, TZ is pretty much as good as gone from New Jersey next summer.

However, I don't know if he'd sign here as a UFA.

I wasn't trying to be either cheeky or flippant either with the "do the math" remark BTW and apologize if it came across that way; was rather just referring to his comment about Winnipeg being a safe place to raise children and that his wife has since given birth. As I said, I'm just speculating here and you may well be correct.

If Zajac would consider coming here, I would hope that we would give him a very competitive offer.

He is a perfect #2C. Very similar offensively to Little, but with more size. In 2013 we would still have Jokinen for another season so you could go Jokinen - Zajac - Scheifele - Slater, and have little and Burmistrov on the Wings.

I will tell you from recent experience that if he and his wife had a child (sounds like that is the case) and she is from Winnipeg and this is where both sets of grandparents are then that could explain the change of heart. Grandparents can be amazing at making a new moms like easier. People move back home all the time for that reason and it wouldn't surprise me if that has caused a modification in thoughts.

Not saying it did but just saying my mother in law is amazing with our kids and takes them all the time which makes my wife really happy and in turn makes life so much easier.

I used to work with Trav for his dad's gas bar back in university. I'll head down there next week and ask Tom what Trav has planned. He'll probably laugh and say he doesn't know but I don't think Trav will be back in Jersey. I could even see him following his pal Parise to Minny and replace Cullen as second line centre
