The Red Wings are very high on Brendan Smith, so until they are certain he can't be a top-pairing #1 defenseman this year (IMO, that'll be in October), they'll hold tight.
After missing out on the big FAs, i really thinkk the Wings will go through a transition season. In my eyes they will give their propects a chance to prove theselves in the NHL and than really be aggressive next FA period.
I still think JayBo makes sense to them, but not at the cost of the whole future they have a few wohles to fill.
Most of their remaining core are on the wrong side of 30 but still have a timeframe to win of 3- maybe 5 years.
If I recall correctly during one of the red wing games, a while back they said Bret Lebda was being groomed to be Lidstroms replacement... Wings should just get him back

I don't think this was ever said, if so Mickey and Murph were having a few too many gingerales during a blowout
In all honesty it does look like they are going to let Smith and Kindl run with this. It might be a mistake, but it is about time we put some of these prospects to use. Smith will be a top 4 d-man the real treat would be if both Big E and Kindl surprise and have better years than expected with the improved ice time. Big E showed nice development last year and was very good when in the lineup with Sweden in the WC. Smith and Kindl are first round draft picks with the size and skating to go along with great tools to be big players in the NHL. If they fail by December then a big trade will have to be considered. If the Wings get off to a good start this could be seen as a blessing and an even bigger selling point with a ton of cap space come UFA's in the summer 2013.
A lot of people assume the Wings are dead, well just how scary is it if Filppula and Howard continue to improve and the kids that play become verified selling points when they start recruiting next year.

Teams with a surplus of D:
Colorado
NYR
Montreal
New Jersey
Team needs:
Colorado- Experience, Top six LH wingers
NYR- Rick Nash, top six LW or 2/3 line RW (to replace Gaborik temporarily)
Montreal- Top six LW, size, scoring
New Jersey- youth, top six RW
I could see deals being made with any of these teams, although Colorado seems less likely due to certain unpleasantries being exchanged between teams
I really love Brendan Smith and see a ton of potential in him, but I think he tops out as a #2. The Wings don't have an internal option for a #1D, so he's gonna have to come by trade (Enstrom) or FA (Weber?).
Not a #1 but any interest in Tallinder and maybe Volchenkov if he waives his NTC?
I think an option like this is more ideal. Detroit can't sell the farm for a bonafied #1 or #2 defenseman at this point, but still stand a good chance of playing solidly rolling 3 lines of decent defensive pairings.
Personally, I think the team is lacking a solid defensive defenseman - and I think that is where they should be looking.... Not trying to replace a two-way stud like Lidstrom (especially Noe that Suter is gone).
IMO the Wings should trade Datsyuk and Zetterberg for as many 1st round picks and blue-chip prospects as possible, tank out 2013, and basically rebuild their team in a year.
I'd do this. Will never happen.

So? Petry is only available in a package for an upgrade (read: Weber) realistically theres nothing on detriot that i'd take for him.
We need ou young capable Dmen far more than Det...

That would/could be a good idea. The bad idea of it is we don't know if those prospects they draft will ready to make an impact on the NHL. Losing 2 worldclass players would also be bad for their PR and the fans would not like it at all.
Because they are Kronwall and White and we know what they have to offer. These are not young up and comers these guys are what they are at this point. I'm down for a rebuild shipping out anyone but Dats and our top prospect and try to stockpile as many picks and young talent as we can. I do not want to end up like the flames scratching and crawling for a playoff spot every year with no real chance of winning anything.
Dubinsky + 1st 2013 + Erixon + Thomas + 1st 2014 + Hagelin for Zetterberg?
Do the Wings really have the assets to bring in a top-pairing defenseman? Seems like they have a fairly shallow pool of prospects, and they really need to start keeping their 1st round picks.
Eh, let the season play out before predicting the demise of the Red Wings. How many times has that been trumpeted (and going back... man, probably the past ten years), only to be proven wrong? Sure this year is different with Lidstrom gone- but I bet they're still at the very least a playoff team.
The defense is in definite danger of mediocrity but Detroit really, really needs a right defenseman. The truth is Rafalski's bad back had him slipping defensively for his last two seasons. Except for a short stretch of Rafalski before that- that has been the legitimate gripe against Detroit going back (over) ten years. Kronwall would even be a legit 2 if they could pair him up with an elite righty.
Besides Weber (and even if he is traded, Nashville wouldn't send him to a division rival) it seems like all the top guys talked about being available play the left side. Getting a lefty that's truly elite and in his prime like Suter is one thing, especially not giving up any assets- but with that option gone who's available that's a righty or has played right recently?
I don't think anyone necassarily truly hates Holland. It's just more of a I'm getting tired of the same thing each offseason.
"We like our team"
"The prices were too high and wasn't a good enough return for the price"
"We made a few moves(sign 4th liners) that we really think will help our team"
Still he's one of the best in the game. He still has too much history to just simply dismiss him completely.
I'd say value is probably there. Dont know if Ill do it but its definitly a good proposal.
If you throw in a 2nd rounder the Rangers will generously throw in former all star, super megastar. God incarcinated Mr. Wade Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedden!
How about that great addition . He has routine and will help your defense as well as get you closer to the capfloor.
If you want to be a contending team, Redden is a must!

In all seriousness if Redden only had one year left I would mind getting him for cheap.
Habs have 6 dman signed and they still have Subban and Diaz to sign.
Habs don't have a number 1, or 2 (Subban, Gorges Markov*) available, but if you need a lesser d I'm sure the habs can part ways with Diaz, Weber, or Kaberle. The first 2 carrying value and the latter not carrying any value until next year.
