Michael Del Zotto agrees to terms with NYR (Brooks: 2 years, ~$2.55M per)

Lost amid the "frenzy" has been the discussions between Slats and Wade Arnott regarding Del Zotto's next contract. The Rangers tendered Del Zotto a qualifying offer of 105 percent of the $875,000 he made last season. Andrew Gross speculates that a three-year deal in the neighborhood of $1.75 million would get it done.

I know Sather likes to play hardball with his RFAs. Del Zotto is not eligible for salary arbitration. Any thoughts on this?

He shouldn't get special treatment, he should get the Dubinsky/Callahan/Girardi treatment.

Sather needs to try and lock him up to a 2 yr deal worth like $1.75 AAV

Keep him an RFA when his next contract expires.

Girardi's 2nd contract was a 2 year deal for $1.55 AAV

The 105 percent offer is just a formality. It's a way for the team to retain negotiating rights with a restricted free agent making less than $1 million. A player making less than $660,000 the previous season must be offered 110 percent. A player making more than $1 million must be offered 100 percent. If a valid qualifying offer is not made, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Rangers gave Marc Staal a 5 year deal worth $19.875 million at the end of his entry-level contract. Staal was 23, coming off a 27 point season.

Del Zotto, 22, had 41 points last year.

As we've seen before, it may take a long time, buy he will get signed eventually. The fans need to stay patient and hopefully some of them won't freak out like they did when Dubi and Staal went through the process.

$1.75 seems a bit low for a defenseman who put up around 40 points in two out of three seasons thus far. It will take $2 million per year at the very least. And if they opt to sign him for 4-5 years, it would probably be closer to a $3-3.5 million cap hit.

$2.5M-$3M per in a 2 year deal for DZ. Bogosian got 2 years/$5M last summer. Same situation as DZ. Not arbitration eligible. $2M in 11-12. $3M in 12-13 which is the arbitration year. DZ has much better numbers.

i think 1.75 would be a steal...but it is right in line with what pretty much everyone gets from slats on their 2nd deal...only exception really is staal who jumped right to 3.975 cause he took a 5 year deal. but girardi, callahan, dubinsky, anisimov, all got 2 year deals for around $2 mil plus or minus a couple 100k

While last season alleviated a lot of the previous concerns, I still think the Rangers have issues about Del Zotto's maturity level in the back of their minds. That, combined with Sather's history when it comes to RFA's, makes me think that the organization is going to put the screws to him. I dont think he'll even approach $3M per year.

Neither do I. $2.25 mil per is the max IMO and that's not too shabby.

Erik Johnson got 2 years/$5.2M in 2010 as a 2nd contract. $2.2M in his non-arb year. $3M in the arb year. Bogosian got $3M in his arb year too. No arbitration rights. 33 points. Missed the season with an ACL. 39 points in 09-10. DZ has 37,11 and 41 points. Its going to cost $3M for DZ's 1st arb year. 2 year contract. DZ will be more expensive than Dubinsky or AA was.

We all love what MDZ brings to the table especially offensively but to be fair, he's not viewed in the same light as Marc Staal was when his entry level contract expired. I'm sure he'll get a very fair deal though.

A $2M or lower AAV would be a steal. I think $2.25M-$2.75M/ year is fair value though.

1.75 is lowballing, and that is a bit unfair to Del Z. 2-3 million is fair value for the kid. If they want to give him a short term deal, that is fine.

I still think we're going to trade him. Stralman will get less money, we have McDonagh and Staal, and Erixon is in the system LD, too.

OT: When did we get a Contract Talk prefix?

Around 2M per would be ok but he still seems lost at times and that may factor in Slats treatment of him

Prust gets $2.5. I don't see how MDZ can possibly get anything less than that. I know he's an RFA, but still. I know Prust isn't a fair comparison, but how about Erik Johnson? He got $3.75.

The Prust contract is not a valid comparison, for obvious reasons. Erik Johnson's contract certainly is. I think we can expect anywhere between 2-3 years at $2.25 to $2.75 per, more if Slats wants to buy some UFA years.

A 4 year deal would take him right up to unrestricted free agency. A 5th year buys his first year of unrestricted free agency.

Jeff Petry who has not played a full NHL season got 2 years/$3.5M as an arbitration eligible player. DZ's arbitration years are worth more than $1.75M as Gross suggested if look at what EDM gave Petry. Start with $3M plus for the arbitration years. DZ should get in the $2M plus range for next season. The numbers are there for him. Bogosian contract. Johnson contract from 2010. They both signed 2 year contracts and $3M was the salary for the 2nd year(arbitration year). That's if the Rangers want a 2 year deal. The more years and the money increases.

Mark Guy represents DZ. Guy is another agent at Newport Sports. Arnott is also an agent at Newport.
