The reason he won't get the Staal treatment is because Staal was in the league for 3 full years before he got his 2nd contract. Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, and Girardi were only in the NHL for about 2 full years give or take.

One of the only players I would love up LONG-term...how long do you think we're lock McD up for? While probably not the Rangers way, I would not hesitate to give him an 8-10 year deal; kid puts on a clinic every night...

You're oversimplifying Sather's decision-making process if you think that.
Staal got that much money because he put opposing forwards (and good ones at that) on their ass every night. Points is a non-factor. Staal's value to the team was high at that point and therefore he got a contract worthy of it.

I'd be willing to offer 4 years, $15 million. Same deal that Erik Johnson just got. $3.5M AAV. I would rather lock him up for 4 years then a two year deal. We have Girardi, Lundqvist, Gaborik, Callahan, Kreider, Boyle, Pyatt, Rupp, Erixon, Biron, and Asham all coming off the books that year, all of which, besides Asham and Rupp, will likely be resigned. That summer will be just a mess. Avoid any contracts that end after the 2014-15 season, because you will just add to that disaster.

move staal to the right side (i have little doubt that a healthy marc staal with a full training camp can make the switch without a problem) and the problem is solved.
I really don't see McDonough getting an 8-10 year deal. The feeling about him is exactly the same feeling everyone had a out Staal when his contract came up. McD will get the status quo...it's just Sather's style...

Just because a guy is a fantastic LHD doesn't mean he can change sides no problem...that's just a silly thought.
Anyway, when you have an all-star defenseman why would you screw with his game?
I'm old school, keep the advantage of low balling a player in a cap era, its one of the true advantages a club has before arbitration rights. It's not like MDZ has solidified his skills, there are still areas in his game he needs to improve on and paying a player still in development should go to the club.

While it may be advantageous in the short-run, low-balling a RFA might cause some goodwill issues when the player becomes a UFA.

It may not be possible to give 8-10 year deals in the next CBA. More than likely, McD will get a contract similar, but slightly higher than what Staal got. Figure 4 or 5 years @ 4.5 mil. Staal wasn't arbitration eligible and only gave up 1 UFA year. McD will be arb eligible and will only have 3 years left until UFA. So he'll either get a 2 year deal, or a 4 or 5 year deal. Given his importance to this team, I think Sather will lock him up longer term.
