What would STL have to give up to get Paul Stastny out of COL?
What would STL have to give up to get Paul Stastny out of COL?
Just curious as to what Avs' fans think on this one.
I've seen a few Stastny trade proposals floating around, which baffles me, because if I had Paul Stastny on my team I would not trade him for anything other than a truly stupid overpayment.
Pietrangelo, Backes and Halak are non-starters in this conversation, but I would be willing to put just about anyone else on the table for a proven star like Stastny.
Having read other threads regarding the trade value of Stastny, I think you'll find that he's wildly overvalued on HFBoards, relative to his cap hit and recent production.

That or....Colorado needs him and would rather keep him?
Although then we would need to figure out which one of our RWs is moving to the left side or flip one for another guy.
Then there is the problem of finding a third line center as well.. It's just generally difficult to get the pieces needed back. We would need a third line center replacement and at least a young winger or defender.
Stastny is not over valued.. Avs fans are just more aware of the fact that he has started to revert back to being closer to a point per game center since 2012 start. He continued producing at an even better rate at the WC as well.
It's not aparent when just looking at his stat sheet without breaking it down.
How much better than Duchene and O'Reilly is Stastny? He's certainly far, far more expensive than the two.
Hes better offensively than O'Reilly and better defensively than Duchene. Most Avs fans are just unsure as to how ready Duchene is to take over the #1 slot just yet.

I love Stastny so I would hate trading him but even then O'Reilly still has to prove that last season wasn't a fluke and Duchene has to prove that last season was a fluke and that he is better than how he played last season. So we kind of need Stastny because those other two haven't proven enough.
What if we did something around Berglund? Or would that just be to pointless for you guys? Maybe a Berglund + Rattie, with other things added to balance it all out.

So would the Avs be willing to part with either O'Reilly or Duchene?
Doubt it. It's too hard to figure out who the odd man out is. Down the line, any of the three could end up being the best one and any one of them could end up a bust. Too much bite in the ass potential.
In general I don't think they will trade him (If at all) until the deadline next season. From the way he has played this year there is a good chance he could be back on track at that point. If Duchene looks ready to be the #1 Stastny's value would increase exponentially.
Right now we won't get the return needed unless a teams GM is willing to take the risk and give Colorado the value needed to make it impossible to say no.
Even then if he is back to form.. Then do you still trade him? Depends..

Or the more likely scenario, Avs fans will clutch at straws to justify Stastny being over valued.

Well, not to state the obvious, but there's risk involved in every deal. Part of what makes Stastny attractive is that he's a couple of seasons removed from being a PPG player. Another sub-60 pt season, and I think that his actual trade value decreases further, IMO.
Isn't Stastny's decline in production linked to the Stewart trade? Just looking at his stats, it seems like that is the reason. IMO, better linemates for Stastny means better production.

It's not all linemates. He is a playmaker so his assists will obviously largely depend on who he is paired with, but he struggled in 2011 after the organization moved to a more defensive system. There was adjustment but I think he's through with that, and it coincides in part with the right set of wingers to flank him. McGinn and Jones have a lot of chemistry with him, and McGinn has the tenacity that is a bit better than Stewart offered.
Other wingers like Olver would have worked too but Sacco has been very odd at times of not giving lines enough time to develop / retain chemistry, or being stubborn about less offensively talented players being given chances in scoring lines...at any rate, it seems to be largely solved by now, so that isn't a concern. Stastny should have a solid season in '12-13.
Remember that Stewart was playing like **** after the injury when he was on Stastny's line. Stewart is not some sort of magical elixir. He would be if he played a true power forward game but he doesn't so it is what it is.
