Updated story

Quote:
... Robinson is expected to be put in charge of not only the defense, but also a penalty kill in need of a major overhaul.
...
"I was very surprised by (Wilson's) call," Robinson, who at one time said he hoped to catch on with the Tampa Bay Lightning near his home in Florida, told the Montreal newspaper when reached in San Jose. "Dougie knew about these other teams (that were expressing interest) so he did the right thing and waited until we both knew where I stood."

The relationship between Wilson, who declined to talk about the hiring Sunday, and Robinson goes back to the mid-1970s when Robinson and Wilson's older brother, Murray, were teammates on the Canadiens. The Sharks general manager and Robinson were both on Team Canada in 1984.
...
No current Sharks has been coached by Robinson, but Jason Demers said that Colin White, now an unrestricted free agent, used to talk about his time with Robinson in New Jersey.
"He always had great things to say about him," Demers said. "Everything he said about him was really positive, that he's a players' coach and all that stuff. For sure it's exciting to see what kind of dynamic he's going to bring and how it's going to change things."

Robinson and his wife, Jeannette, have been in San Jose for a few days, his first contact with the team having come on July 1.
Did anyone see Larry Robinson at this dinner in Los Gatos Thursday? Maybe he said, "Shea. I'm coming here to be Associate Coach. Come here and I will turn you from a great player into a no-brainer Hall of Famer, and get you Cups. Maybe not as many as I have, but a few."

Weber's an RFA. Unless DW trades for him, earliest he'd be a Shark would be next July 1.

Well of course I am joking and know this, just pointing out that Larry Robinson has been in town for a while and supposedly Shea Weber was here too. Oh, the possibilities.

Isn't Robinson the one who took over HC in NJ toward the end of the season a few years back and won the cup? I think The Todd might feel a little more pressure not to screw this up now now that at least an interim replacement is on staff... Oddly enough it should also make his life easier having a pretty great coach to help him out. I would look for Burns, Demers, Braun and maybe even Vlassic to make pretty good to great strides this year in their development. Back in the day Blake credited his tutelage with how he, Zhitnik and Sydor were able to help the kings to the finals back in 93.

6 time stanley cup champ as player, 1 time cup champ as head coach, 1 time cup champ as assistant coach, 1 of the greatest defensemen ever. And now you can add choker to his resume of achievements.

Yeah but Robbinson was on 5 stanley cup winning teams in the seventies... It isn't a fair comparison.

Good, I like this signing. Sounds to me like he has a pretty good track record. I think that even though he didn't run the PK for the Devils last season he probably knows their PK system very well and can definitely bring those fundamentals here. I wonder when and if they'll announce if Dumb and Dumber will be keeping either of their jobs and who may or may not replace them. Also is this what was supposed to be tomorrows big announcement? I was hoping for a FA signing or something but this is just as good.

Robinson was a tough tough man as well. Even tough guy Dave Schultz wanted to grab and hold and not fight him. Didn't work out that well

If the Sharks are out of the playoff picture next season, I wanna see a Robinson - Wilson bottom pairing.

Easily one of the most feared players of that era. He was big and strong and although he didn't fight all that much...he made whoever picked a fight with him pay.

I bet DW can still skate better than most of the Sharks.
