We don't need to replace him, we have six other defensemen already. People overvalue youth. Fayne brings nothing besides defense. You never hear about him being a leader or being a locker room guy like Cam. And Devils just need one of the prospects to pan out for it to work out.
And I don't really need to prove anything to you. It's just my thought on watching Fayne play to say he's lazy.
He was Captain at Providence (like Lou was) and supposedly has solid intangibles, leadership. He is just a little too young to be a leader on the most veteran team in the league.
Let him continue to develop here and he will certainly mentor the next crop of young D men on how to be successful in our system, no doubt.
Whatever it takes to get him locked up for a few years. I wouldn't mind seeing him get a little more than most might think he's worth. We're close enough to the cap floor. It's just like I said we can afford to take on a contract that isn't exactly premium. It won't even get us anywhere near the cap ceiling. That, and I'm not taking any sympathy on JVB's wallet. We don't have to spend to cap, but no problem rewarding certain players who make this team more competitive.
Filing for arbitration isn't a reason for panicking. It was obvious from the start that the qualifying offer is just a formality to retain his rights and he will get a better deal. This was his right and now there's a certain timetable for him.
And now there's no risk for some GM throwing an offer sheet at Fayne. Sure the Devils would likely match, but now there are no distractions in the negotiation process. And that's what uncle Lou appreciates.
What often goes unnoticed is that Fayne is really adaptive and won't be affected, should his defensive partner or role change. It's pretty impressive especially for a relatively young player. In a way Fayne is like Dainius Zubrus. Both can handle a variety of roles and linemates and bring much needed flexibility for their team. And usually the pair Fayne vacates is a solid one (if not the most solid), just like the offensive line where Zubrus plays.
[armchair gm'ing]Give him three years and total salary somewhere between 6,5 and 7 millions.[/armchair gm'ing]
