NHL to Wales?

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sports/...1466-31137262/

Quite ambitious. I can see it happening on a Saturday or Sunday, the main problem with a mid-season game would be fitting it in around the Winter Classic with all the hype, and the all-star game/Olympics.

This would be awesome especially since it looks like I may spend a couple years living in Gloucester. Able to catch a little NHL hockey...

There is still another year to sort it out. I won't be shocked if it doesn't happen, but at the moment I'd say there is a good chance.

Only if they market it properly to the general public/non-hockey community. We already had this discussion in the hockey in GB thread, the two games in London had a very insignificant effect, for starters I did not even know they were taking place until it happened.

I think they'll do a much better job of adveritising this. Far more tickets to sell, far more to lose than a couple of games in an arena in London.

Sorry to necro this thread but...

Quote:
The Welsh capital could play host to a series of major-league US ice hockey games as part of new proposals that could potentially be worth millions to the economy.

America’s National Hockey League (NHL) are in talks to annually hold a televised league match in Cardiff in a three to five-year deal with the Millennium Stadium.
Ouch.

But this would be cool. Might be cheaper to see Leafs game here than in Toronto, sadly.

I'm talking about the fact that Leafs games cost an arm and a leg.

EDIT: Oh, and the fact that they seem to forget Canada. You'd think the Western English would know better...

Can't really see this happening but the fact that there is zero noise being made about the nhl starting the season in Europe this year does make you think that they may be planning for something mid season (or not at all). The Olympics complicate matters of course.

I think the lockout ruined any chance of it happening

Did that group of hockey/businessmen chaired by Regan even bother to go to New York in the end?

I would assume not, I think the NHL were too occupied with the prospect of a lockout to worry about a trivial game in Europe

Semi-OT but...wow man, there are actually NHL fans in Wales? I've only ran into four people here who know about hockey...three are Canadians, one's a Finn.

Your location says Cardiff, surely you are aware of the Cardiff Devils? It would surely be safe to assume that of their usual 1,000+ crowds some of them would follow the NHL? Cardiff has 3 senior hockey teams, junior teams at every age group, a ladies team, 3 university teams and god knows how many rec teams.

Maybe you should check out a game one day.

I'd be pretty sure this year is out with Sochi, the rescheduling of the Kraft Hockeyville game, the outdoor New Years Day game (due to lock-out) and some sucking up for another lost All-Star game because of Sochi
I can't see the NHL and NHLPA agreeing on extra travel next season.

Dude I was exaggerating a bit. Though it is true that those are the only people I've actually personally met who follow (or play) hockey. It's a bit underground, at least compared to football and rugby, the former of which is the only sport I actually play at an organised level.

So what's your excuse for not attending Devils games?

None really.

I should actually check out the rec hockey programme the Devils run as well. I played shinny back in Canada (I'm an ex-pat) and I'd sort of like to get back into it.
