None of the big-4, no good roster Dman going back.

the only thing that we lose that we really would like to keep is klefbom.

Might as well sign weber to an offersheet than that overpayment

I don't want to get involved in chasing Weber if the price is anywhere close to what you posted. That is far, far more than what we got when we traded away a better d-man in Pronger.
Yeah - since the lockout, the biggest stars traded would be who? Thornton and Pronger twice?

Joe Thornton returned Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau, and Brad Stuart

Chris Pronger was had for Eric Brewer, Jeff Woywitka, and Doug Lynch.

Then Pronger was traded for Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid, a first round pick, a 2nd round pick, and a conditional 1st (which we got when they won the Cup)

The fact that Poile would be dealing from a position of weakness leads me to believe that the price would not be quite as high as some people may think.

If Weber only signs for a year, he risks losing him next summer for nothing, which after having that happen with Suter I don't imagine he's too keen on.

It really depends though. Take Carolina for example. They gave up way too much, IMO, for a guy that was a sure bet to sign there for free a year from now.

Now for the least surprising move of the off-season.

Oilers twitter

Oilers have re-signed Oklahoma City Barons Head Coach Todd Nelson and Assistant Coaches Gerry Fleming & Rocky Thompson

We're going to have to overpay in a trade to get a physical top-4 defenseman. 4.25MM for the next 4 years is pretty manageable. Steve Tambellini alluded that he was willing to take risks.

I'm also hoping Volchenkov can become a friend/mentor to Yaks

First of all, i'm assuming that you're making this proposal on the premise that he is signed to a long term extenstion.

Second of all, two top 6 players, a proven top 4 defenseman (even if he is oft injured), a blue chip prospect and a 1st round pick in a supposedly deep draft for centers (we desperately need a good center prospect) for any player is a horrid overpayment. Trades like these never happen in the real world.
Also, keep in mind that Poile is not in a position of strength here so he is in no position to ask for such a massive package.
Weber would be great to have but i'm never a fan of gutting a team for one player, this isn't the NBA.

Keep in mind any team can talk to him right now, so we would know if we could sign him before making the trade.
Yeah that's a major over payment.

They get two-6 forwards, a top-4 defense, an elite prospect and a 1st round pick?

You may want to re-think that.

I don't mind taking risks, but 4 years is too much to take on a guy like Volchenkov. The guy is only 30, but with his injury history I will not be surprised to see him as a useless player in a couple years. He's pretty much becoming a bottom pairing d-man.

Steep price to pay but worth it if you are getting Weber.

Landing Doan would lessen the blow up front

Rumor from main board about Thomas to CGY. That's kinda odd.

Joe's right on this one. I would actually look to trade for Volchenkov but I think he is approaching cap dump and I think the Devils are aware of this. He is a solid #4/5 physical guy but his body has taken some blows over the years and I think his window of effectiveness will be closed by the last year of his contract.

the thing is that this would hardly "gut" the team. We have enough depth players to compensate for guys like Hemmer and Gagner.

Most of the core remains intact.. Weber,Smid, Petry and the 2 Schutlz would make us set on D. 4 kids with vets in Smyth + Horcoff, prospects like Paajarvi, Lander, Hartikainen and plugs in Jones, Eager, Petrell and Hordichuk should be sufficient enough to make us a good team.

Jbo would probably have to go the other way.

Jbo for Thomas + someone cheap and good or a 1st rd pick

No question, it would be truly hilarious though, if the Flames traded Bouwmeester for Thomas and a pick or something, because that would comfortably qualify as a terrible waste of an asset.

Plus Bouwmeester paired with Chara would be kind of frightening actually.

Well, maybe you guys are right.

What about Mezaros?

I doubt it. Probably for plugs and then they flip Kipper for cap space.

Jbo on a team where he doesn't have to play 28 minutes a night is going to look good regardless IMO.

I don't see Mezaros being dealt. He was d-man of the year in PHI couple years back. They just lost Carle and lost out on Suter and Pronger's career is more than likely done.

Suter going to Minny really ****ed things up.

Oddly enough when I saw the rumor of Thomas to CGY I was kinda shocked. Then I opened the thread and thought the same thing.

umm that makes no sense.. considering Thomas wont be playing this year and is a UFA next. Thomas at this point is nothing but cap dump. No way Kipper gets traded just because fLames acquire Thomas' rights.

salaries would pretty much have to equal out in a BOS, CGY trade. As long as D.Hamilton is not going to CGY I dont care less about this rumor.

Doan to Dallas makes a lot of sense especially if Morrow is going to retire.

Is Thomas really not going to play? I can't see why CGY would trade for him if he wasn't.
