People always talk about the NHL's problems and what not, but when I look at some of the amazing players coming up today - what the NHL is doing wrong doesn't really seem important to me.

Ovechkin, Heatley, Kovalchuk, Crosby, Spezza - the NHL is in good hands; regardless of what Bettman does.

12 out of the top 20 all time scorers in the NHL are still player or have retired in the last 5 seasons. I think that contributes to the changing of the guard. More and more rookies will get their chance and be counted on night in and night out to not only produce but lead their teams.

Not to mention players like Bertuzzi, Thornton, etc who are still young.

I like how two of the five players you mentioned aren't even in the NHL!

I completely agree. We are in the midst of the end of an era here. Guys like Francis, Messier, Leetch, Roy, Hasek, Yzerman, Lemieux, etc were among the best the game has ever seen and this could be the last we see of them. If there's any kind of lockout or strike next year we may see a mass retirement of older players like we've never seen before. All this is great news for the younger players in the league as it opens up more jobs for them and they'll be counted on by their teams to play bigger roles.

While he's not 22, 28 is hardly old. He's still got a good 5-7 years in him.

It looks as if you will be adding Nikolai Zherdev to that list in the near future...

And Ryan Kesler for the Canucks is making it hard to send him down. He has a goal and an assist in 4 games, and has looked very solid on the 3rd line.

Yeah it's weird.. I personally feel the Stars started out the 2003/2004 season with one of their best teams ever (on paper) but there were still 6 rookies able to crack the lineup..

- Steve Ott
- Antti Miettinen
- Trevor Daley
- Mattias Tjarnqvist
- Steve Gainey
- John Erskine

Hell, Jason Bacashihua even got his first call up ever if I am not mistaken.
