Now that we got Larry Robinson I wonder if Jason Arnott would have interest in the 3C position. I know he's not fast but it would be dope if we picked up both Doan and Arnott!

I think that's good to hear, because if the sharks are lacking anything more than speed it has always been passion.
Don't forget Brad Stuart!

Say no to Arnott. He acted extremely unprofessionally with the Blues at the end of last season. I don't want him anywhere near this team.

What did he do? I didn't pay attention.

Frankly I'm just high on Arnott for the player he used to be. I actually have no idea if he good defensively or on face offs etc etc. But his stats looked pretty good last year.

Arnott wouldn't work here. Doan would at the right price.

My concern with Doan was that he dropped down to third line at the end of last season. That is a red flag in terms of fall off. All this talk of multi-year for Doan is wishful thinking. It is thinking of the rep and not the reality. It's like signing a good player with a bad knee and expecting the performance of the player that he was when he was 100%. Doan is a high risk signing and the longer the contract, the higher the risk. His play of last season justifies $3.5-4.0mil max.

He may have dropped to the "third" line, but he still played 18-20+ minutes a night.

Signing Doan is always a concern because old and overrated, but still one of the better options available. I'm not too worried about the long term cap implications.

I grant that it is mitigated by his playing all situations which helped keep his minutes up. The Yotes also didn't go top heavy like the Sharks as they went with a balanced attack. My suspicion is that he is close to the cliff where you will see a pretty big skating drop off.

Not at you WT, but I am getting real tired of those who are willing to sacrifice speed for "heart". At this rate the team could have all the heart in the world and the Kane's etc. will still skate and score circles around them in the playoffs and the heartmongers will come on again and say the Sharks just need more heart/grit. Flat out, the Sharks need speed and in the top 6.

maybe averaged but he didn't play 18+ minutes every night. For a guy who is supposed to be a top dog his minutes were bizarrely inconsistent. I think Tippet didn't find Doan to be valuable in certain situations.

It's pretty close. Pavelski's TOI near the end of the season fluctuated too.

Yeah but not quite as much. Plus Pavs averaged more ice time than Doan in both the reg season and playoffs.

Don't really know what that has to do with anything. This isn't who is better debate. All I'm saying is the numbers don't always tell the whole story. The games Doan subbed 16 minutes weren't so much because he was aging and tired, but because the team went into complete shut-down mode in the 3rd period. Doan is pretty good defensively, but he isn't known as a shut-down player.

Im just pointing out Doan seems to have a limited use. You pointed out that he isn't a shutdown player, but the Sharks play power vs power... Where are the Sharks going to put Doan?

I would rather pay Semin 8 mil than Doan more than 5 mil... especially for more than 3 years... That's just a train wreck of disappointment waiting to happen...

That really depends on how the lines are set-up, but he wouldn't really look out of place on any of the 3. He isn't a shutdown player, but he isn't bad defensively.

Can I make this the title of the Off-Season Thread?

Seriously. I'd love Doan if he were willing to come in cheap in a third line role. Otherwise, I don't think it's wise to give him term.

Sure Doan would look nice on that third line. I'd agree with you.

As a result I'd hypothesize that his value on the RW for the third line would be 3.5 million maybe for two years. For that contract the Sharks are likely to get their moneys worth. Significantly more than that the Sharks would probably be better off signing two other players.

Would rather have Langenbrunner for the bottom 6, he would come cheaper and is definitely a DW type player with connections to Robinson.

I'd rather sign Doan to a 4 year 5-5.5m contract, then trade Pavs/1st/Hertl for Nash.

Eklund says Sharks are not on the list for Doan. Guess that means he will sign with the Sharks...
