The guy's just passionate, too passionate sometimes. Say what you will, he knows his stuff, he is respected in hockey circles, he gets to get his "weird on" on national TV, and here we sit, typing away on a hockey message board.
In my opinion he's very entertaining and knowledgeable, so I'd say he's pretty good analyst/colour man. Yeah, there're some weird or awkward things he says, some anecdotes or pieces of information are unnecessary, but you can tell he's really passionate and he knows his hockey. Colorful personality, he's ok methinks.
Pierre actually played club hockey at Hobart College, which was basically at best a division 3 JV team at the time. He has no specific playing background and was actually more known as a good squash player rather than a hockey player at college ! He was the asst. coach at Babson under Steve Stirling but also coached squash at Babson College at the same time. Word has it he has family contacts with Scotty Bowman and hence his contact with Pittsburgh. Any thought that he was a so-called pro in Europe is in name only especially if anybody actually watched him handle the puck !
Although probably one of the games biggest overachievers you have to give him credit for " learning" the game as a non-player and also getting player respect..
I'm surprised that Pierre McGuire did not play in the NHL. Or the AHL. He talks a good talk.
He's alright in small doses but eventually he gets annoying. After 5 games of listening to him in the caps habs series I had him on mute for the final two. He definitely knows a lot about the game I just wish he would tone it done a bit he's to over the top a lot of the time.
I'll give him some credit though his commentary can make games I normally wouldn't tune into interesting.
He knows his stuff that's for sure but he just needs to tone it down and I don't just mean the voice. Trim the fat on the useless knowledge. There's nothing I'd rather be doing than watching or playing hockey and sometimes I feel like Im way too into it. That being said almost every time I hear Pierre I'm just like "dude seriously get a life".
