Sean Burke signs extension

Per James Mirtle:

Quote:
Coyotes have signed Sean Burke to a contract extension as assistant to the GM/goaltender coach.
I think that's the first I've heard of the assistant to the GM duties, but this is good news.

EDIT: Per Sarah McLellan, it's a promotion:

Quote:
Extension also comes with a promotion for Burke. Add assistant to the GM to his resume.
And it looks like there's a tactical benefit here too:

Quote:
Coyotes get goalie coach Sean Burke under a multi-year contract extension. That's step 1 to getting Smith locked up long-term.

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed Sean Burke to a multi-year contract extension to serve as Assistant to the General Manager/Goaltender Coach. In addition to his current responsibilities that include overseeing all goaltenders in the Coyotes system and player development, Burke will now work with Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney, Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving and Director of Hockey Administration Chris O’Hearn in all areas of hockey operations.

Great. I remember seeing him at the Draft table so I assumed he wasn't going anywhere. Probably waiting for that July 9 deadline too or something. One of the best things this team has done was getting rid of Fuhr and replacing him with Burke.

This is a great move.

Burke can be attributed with a good chunk of this team's success over the past 3 seasons. Locking him up long-term was a must.

And another domino falls...

Yes! Awesome!

First order of business, go find some hidden gem goalie to back up Smith and dump that loser Bryzgalov.

Excellent!

(I love how this board appreciates how important this is, too.)

Good for Burke. Maybe this is some sort of apprenticeship in management for him? Get his feet wet for later in his career if he decides to do something other than a tender coach? Or Don just enjoys and trusts his input and company, so Burke got a bonus?

Am I going crazy? Wasn't he re-signed weeks ago? Maybe it was a dream I had? How sad is my life that I would have dreams about HF Boards?

This is seriously the best news of the summer. The Fuhr years were just brutal. Can you imagine how Brian Boucher would've performed under Burke?

He wasn't exactly a stud under Allaire.
